Next best android tv device to the shield?

by BusyFun3

Owned a shield for a few months, loved everything about it, amazing device but unfortunately the internet speeds were very bad and when I updated to a 4k setup had a really hard time playing high bitrate remux movies. I contacted support and didn't really get anywhere , and with the 5ghz wifi speeds in my bedroom being super slow on the shield but my xbox // phone // laptop all getting 20-30x the speeds on the same speed test in the same location finally decided to part ways with it but I'm back in the market for a device as impressive as the shield, or the next best thing. Preferably around the same price or less, what's a device that's comparable to the shield ? Looking for something really smooth , stable, and not laggy at all, thanks guys.

EDIT: thanks for all the feedback and suggestions guys but I really am not looking for a way to fix the shield, I've exhausted about every possibility already that you could mention short of wiring ethernet to my room, but my bedroom is really far away from the modem and I don't want a cable running across my entire home. Just looking for suggestions for other good android tv devices or the next best thing there is, thanks guys for all the feedback and help !

Sorry to hear you had so much trouble there really is nothing close or comparable to the shield the next best thing leaves a huge gap

Much to my own surprise the Mi Box 3 has been good to me since 8.0 and a factory reset. 4k not that reliable. Mi Box S should do the trick.

Your problems sounds easily fixable with two Powerline adapters and ethernet cables.

I feel this is more a problem with WiFi than your hardware. The media you’re playing are demanding for WiFi, so I would rather suggest Ethernet than the Mibox. Or even some of those Ethernet over power solutions(I guess you can’t run Ethernet all over your place?). Not sure what kind of speed you can get out of it though.

Well there's basically one other Android TV device that's readily available and it's the Mi Box. But there's nothing really that compares when you are talking about "something really smooth , stable, and not laggy at all".

Maybe setup the Shield in a different part of the house just to see if it improves? I'm wondering if you have it tucked away in an entertainment center or something where wifi signal is a bit lacking. Also, was this for all apps or were you just seeing issues trying to stream your massive high bitrate media files?

what kind of speeds are we talking about? Stop comparing your phone and laptop speeds to a box hidden under a tv. Try Airflow to see what local bandwidth you're really getting. And if your xbox has such great wifi speeds why not use it to stream the 4k content?

Also where are you streaming your 4k high bitrate remux movies from? Are you direct torrent streaming them or are you streaming from a local plex(?) server? 4k high bitrate remux movies require 100mbps+ sustained bandwidth. If you think you are going to get better wifi speeds in your situation from ANY other AndroidTV or Android box, you are dreaming. Use Powerline and keep your shield instead. Or change your main router and go for a mesh network with more reach.

every possibility already

I doubt it

short of wiring ethernet to my room

it's either that or forget about 4k

My shield is doin the same thing. Wth lol.

I read another thread yesterday stating that the next Shield update is supposed to fix the wifi issues and that there's already a beta version of that update available to people who register their interest for it

Looking at a fire stick 4K. Any thoughts? Have a mi box 3 and happy but like to try it out. Mainly for Netflix and pirate stream apps. No 4K requirement and have a chrome cast.

What router are you using and what channel is the 5GHz broadcasting on?

You may need to change the 5GHz channel. Try that and see what happens.

I would say mi box or Jetstream but if i may suggest it a WiFi problem. I've had occasions where only one device was running slow on my network, assumed it to be the culprit but fixed the issue by optimizing my wifi area.

An easy way to confirm this is connect the shield to a strong hot spot to see whether speeds improve.

I have both Shield and Zidoo boxes, all I can say is the Zidoo is over all less laggy and smoother than the Shield. Although it doesn't have Chromecast that's easily remedied, just buy one. You want 4k Netflix buy a Chromecast ultra.

Have you tried Ethernet?

The only device with class leading dual band AC MIMO (dual antennas) WiFi is the new FireTV Stick 4K.

You would need a modern AC MIMO home WiFi router as well to take advantage of it.

Even then streaming highbitrate content across WiFi may not work properly.

I have a DirectTV Now beta box and it’s pretty cool.

Use Powerline!

I have my Shield connected to a NAS trough powerline and works flawlessly. https://imgur.com/a/HLs9BkJ/

sadly like others have said there is nothing that comes close, but people seem to like the mibox. I have one and thinks its trash, but ymmv.

It may not be as difficult to run some ethernet as you might think... I do not even bother to try to use wireless because of things like this. you can also try moving wifi closer, but wifi is a losing battle.
