Hard drive keeps changing name/path which requires Kodi to rescan and I lose all my watched flags. Anyway to fix this?

by i_want_the_odds

I am using a Mi Box (older, not S) and plugging in a 4TB WD portable drive into its USB port. The drive gets assigned some random name when it connects (like 4564-KE86) and Kodi uses this for the path to import media from it. The problem is, every time I disconnect the drive, the MiBox powers off or sometimes just when it sleeps, the drive gets assigned a new random name and Kodi has to re-import all the media again and I lose all my watched flags.

Is this normal and, if so, is there any work around for this behavior?

Thanks!

No idea on the hard drive side of things but many years ago when I used Kodi I found NFO files useful.for.storing watched status.

Equally a trakt.tv plug in would help.

I assume you are disconnecting the drive to load more movies? Not a fix but if you're using a desktop to load movies I would just run the free version of Emby as a Kodi backend, keep that drive at the PC instead of moving it around. That's what I did for a long time when I had my movies on a NAS. Now I just use Emby client apps mostly...

The official solution on the Kodi wiki is to set up a MySQL server and use that to save your watched progress. Another solution is to use a file explorer app with FTP or SMB functionality and send them over that way. Depending on your internet setup this can take a bit.

I had the same issue a few months ago and what fixed it is simply one of the system updates. Are you up to date?
