New Android TV capable of less than my OG Chromecast.

by cjbeames

I bought an Android TV. Why buy a Chromecast ultra and a new TV, I thought. It seems though that the TV has Built in Chromecast AND Android TV as though they are seperate entities. Meaning , if I run the YouTube app from the TVs remote my Google Home Mini cannot pause/play/stop etc but if I ask Google to play something on YouTube it will stream it and have control over playback

On top of that, after the first day the built in chromecast could no longer be accesed to stream netflix frome the assistant althought it does work from an app. the first couple of times I tried it was able to steam Netflix, now the the assistant read out the confirmation line and immediately afterwards says that it cannot do that and to try from a smart device.

My Android TV works less well than the Chromecast it replaced. Is this the Android experiece or is there something that I can do to make this work as expected?

Edit: some clarifications in bold .

Further clarification: can Google assistant control playback on Android TV?

My TV: Philips 7383

Chromecast built-in is pretty limited...

Sadly that's the experience.

If your main use is casting, you would be better using a Chromecast, the built-in solution for Android TV is limited and not as reliable, it's more of a plus for Android TV than a fully developed solution.

I realize everyone is talking about a TV with android TV built in but I just want to state for the sake of future researchers that I have a Shield tv and it works fine with the assistant/google home.

It works great from the apps on both droid and Chromebook for me. I've had no problem playing apps via my Homes, though results very. Tunein will play whatever easily as will Play Music. Netflix just does a search, but no big deal at all.

I have the 58" 4k Hisense Costco is blowing out. Considering how smooth the Youtube sync is, the price of 330 is insane.

Yeah, it feels a bit unfinished, but Google products often do. Like, it plays podcasts if you cast with a phone but there's no app to browse.

We're swedes living in the US and the ability to run the SVT app is revolutionary. That's Sweden's BBC and it's a mind blowing app.

My Shield TV integrates just about flawlessly with my Home devices. Now the MiBox S on the other hand had some issues which led me to return it and bite the bullet for a Shield.

And you can't set a Google Photos folder for the screen saver. So mad at the "Chromecast built in". I am able to play stuff from netflix. Movies play fine. Shows need an extra play command.
If you are logged into Netflix on the TV in a kids account you have to log out of the kids account to play anything that is not available in the kids account.

Dude, just buy a shield and hook it up to your dumb TV. Problem solved
