Specs are similar and new one is a little bit slimmer. New remote has more buttons. Mi box S is running Oreo. Otherwise I don't see any difference.
2016 Mi Box can still do Kodi HD audio pass through. The 2018 “S” version cannot.
2016 Mi Box has an Infra Red receiver. 2018 S has more buttons on its remote.
AFIK MI Box s is for international version which doesn't come with IR receiver.
MI Box 3 - MDZ 16AB has IR receiver.
If you want official android TV there are two the mibox and the mibox S they are not much different in specs but the mibox S is newer and will get updates longer. It's only officially available through Walmart and is $59.99usd or less there.
