Brand new out of the box, the first thing I did was an attempt to update the mi box... There's only around 5gb on the device and there was only 400mb left on it... how in the world am I supposed to get the update..? Thanks

Try resetting it.
Something doesn't add up. If it's brand new it should have around 3.5GB free.
Maybe it was a return and the previous owner filled it up.
Plug in an USB drive and make it into adoptable storage through the settings? This should turn the USB into part of the internal storage and you may be able to update and install other apps
