Toshiba TV volume way too loud!

by nelz69

Hey guys, I recently brought a Toshiba android TV (43U7850AZ) (Android 8.0) (MT5891) so far I'm actually pretty happy with it. There is a problem, however, and that is that the volume is set way too loud. Volume setting 1 on my TV is probably the equivalent of 20 on other TV's. I have tried fixing this by installing apps such as Fine Volume Control and Precise Volume, these, however, did not work. I then learnt about engineering mode which apparently lets you change the volume on the hardware. I then tried installing several MTK engineering apps but these didn't work / fail to run. The only other way to enter engineer mode from what a can tell is to type a certain code in your dialer which I've course Android TV doesn't have. I am now at my wits end!

Could anyone please tell me a way to fix the volume on my TV? There surely has to be some kind of solution to this? Thank you to anyone that helps. :)

Damn, we l've come to an era where we have to install additional apps to solve volume? The tv makers of yesteryear are probably shaking their head.

Will a hardware solution suffice? Like a cheap soundbar?

That's a manufacturing defect. RMA that SOB.

Have you contacted Toshiba's support services? Doesn't sound normal

Found solution on the Russian forum: https://4pda.ru/forum/index.php?showtopic=959258&st=240#entry90380345

  1. Unzip the ZIP archive in the attachment and find AQ.bin

  2. Copy AQ.bin to the root folder of the USB drive. Connect the drive to the TV.

  3. On the remote control, press “Source”, then 3195, select “General Settings”, then “Overseas Settings”.

  4. Select “Update AQ”.

  5. After the update is complete, restart the TV.

4b. If anomalies are observed from the first try, for example, the broadcast TV does not turn on, favorites are gone, do not panic. Wait a moment, everything will load. And long press the power button. Confirm shutdown. If you have fast boot mode turned on and the TV turns off instantly (goes into sleep mode), then press the shutdown button on the item until a confirmation of shutdown appears. Turn it on again.

  1. The problem is solved, the sound on the unit has become quiet.

PS: Try on own risk.

Try sideloading the dialler app if you can, otherwise a 3rd party dialer.

otherwise, if there's no firmware fix, look for an equaliser app. Your can reduce the volume for all frequencies to bring the overall volume down.

If that's not low enough, you'll need to route the sound through an amplifier (ironically) or speakers/soundbar

Have you looked at the TV's audio settings, not the Android TV's part, to see if there are any TV specific audio settings?

I found a manual, but not sure if it's the right one, but based on what I found and what I would "Expect" a TV to do, here are some suggestions.

If there is/are TV specific sound settings, you could see if there is an equalizer option, and then turn all of the bands down (the same amount). If this is an option, this should reduce the overall "volume" of the TV's speakers. You may have to later go back and adjust the individual bands, to make the TV sound "right".

To access the TV's sound "mode" you might need to be in a non-Android TV mode, like tuner or by selecting an HDMI port.

So, here is how I think you might be able to get to the TV's audio settings. Take the non-Android TV remote, and press "Menu", then use the "up" and "down" buttons till you find the Audio page. And hopefully there you will find TV audio settings that you can adjust use to compensate for the "loudness" of your TV.

I also saw a mention of "Auto Volume" which I take to mean some kind of "leveling" feature, in the past, I've had numerous issues with this "feature" mainly with the TV ending up too loud or too soft. So I usually end up disabling this, but your mileage may vary.

I tend to think of TV's like yours to be two devices, a TV and an Android TV box. And as a result you may have to go into both or each to make "adjustments" to the TV.

I hope that this info was useful/helpful.

Best of luck in getting your TV speaker audio level issues fixed.

Did you call support?

Thank you so much for your responses guys. I side-loaded a dialer app and entered the code to enter engineering mode but it didn't work. I side-loaded the app MTK Engineer Mode 3.2.1 which told me that engineermode.apk didn't exist on my rom. Looks like the Toshiba people conveniently got rid of it, that was nice of them, haha. I then tried to side-load engineermode.apk from various MTK roms but these didn't work. The sound settings are very basic so nothing I can change there.

I have been playing my media through a PC and turning the sound down on that, however, I would really like to bypass this and use my TV directly and be able to watch live TV which I haven't been able to do because of this issue. I'm actually really happy with the sound it's just the volume starts off too loud so it would be a shame to have to get a soundbar or something.

I live in New Zealand, there is no Toshiba support in my country from what I can find the closest is in Europe so that's not really an option, just one of the 'benefits' living in a small country in the corner of the world :). I would have to deal with the retailer directly who I assume wouldn't know how to fix the issue but ill try to call them next week.

I'll maybe try some equalizer apps but I scared I'll make the sound worse. My search for a solution continues..
