My impressions of Remotes for the Nvidia Shield

by NoShftShck16

I, like most of you I think, am generally not satisfied with the default remote for the Shield. Though honestly just having physical buttons for volume would solve most of my issues, I just never liked the whole package. It was frequently lost, felt like a toy, it seems it would wake the TV just by picking it up (super annoying with kids). Also managing the battery life never felt reliable. In theory the coin battery should last while but I frequently swapped it out because it would seemingly just not work and I'd have to use the garbage Android app or worse, the clunky physical TV remote that sort of worked.

But I digress...

Before I picked up the Logitech I tried the WeChip G20 (v2) and the Rii Fly Mouse .

WeChip G20

Initial impressions were great. It felt solid and overall I liked the larger size and button array. I didn't need anything too fancy so price point was perfect. First major issue was lack of CEC volume controls. I thought that maybe maxing out the TV volume and sticking with the software volume would be fine but unfortunately there are just two few steps in Android's volume for that to be acceptable. Plus my TV has a "on" noise that was earth shattering at full volume. The other nitpick is for the life of me, across 4 tv/remotes, I could not get the remote to learn the power for my TV. So while I could turn the shield on and off which could also take care of my TV's power, the one CEC feature of the remote was not working. Ultimately it left me with a bad taste in my mouth and I sent it back.

Rii Fly

Same thing as the WeChip. First impressions were awesome. I thought the keyboard would be a nuisance or novelty but it ended up being really helpful in apps like YouTube. It also added such a satisfying amount of weight to the remote. All the buttons in red are CEC enabled. However it was the same story as the WeChip. Most of the directions are poorly translated or for a slightly different model. Forums and Google weren't much help either. I couldn't get it to learn any IR functions across any tv/remote combinations.

Logitech Harmony

I picked up this on sale for $40. So please take that amount into consideration when reading this.

First impressions blew me away. The remote felt perfect. It has a soft rubberized bottom that allows it to stay put on an angled couch cushion. It sounds stupid but this means when you put it next to you it isn't going to slide its way into the abyss (like the Shield remote does). The setup process was quick and painless and the app is significantly nicer than Nvidia's or Android's generic remote app.

Values adds (for me)

I have SmartThings with several devices across the house and by the end of next year I hope to have all light switches converted to smart ones. With this consideration being able to setup an "activity" that will turn on the TV and dim surrounding lights is amazing. If you have a soundbar, or more complex receiver setup, the Logitech remote has a ton of compatibility to make sure everything comes on and is switched to the proper mode.

Conclusion

If you just want a better remote and have a newer TV (less than probably 5 years old) then I would highly recommend the Rii Fly Mouse first. Its a big upgrade if you get the CEC controls to work for such a small amount of money. If you have anything more than just a TV or will in the near future, the $40 (current price) premium is well worth it.

I'm happy to answer any questions about it. I couldn't find a post like this when I was looking for remotes so hopefully this can help other people out.

I don't know why everyone on here isn't using Harmony. It's been the go to standard for years.

If you can turn on the Shield with a G20, shouldn't the Shield's CEC be able to turn on the TV? Therefore if the TV does not turn on when turning on the Shield, wouldn't it be a problem relating to the TV-Shield interaction and not the remote?

Does the Harmony work with multiple ir devices? Like I have an old soundbar so need ir for the TV and soundbar.

Been using harmony remote for years, its allright.. wish it had a home button I could map up since Netflix is an asshole and makes you hit exit.. ive got a few color buttons mapped for that but its not intuitive and nobody uses it.

FYI: you tried the Rii MX6 v2, not the v1 intended for most Shield setups.

CEC has nothing whatsoever to do with remotes.

It's a HDMI protocol for media players, TV's and AVR's type devices to talk to each other.

ie Shield receives volume increase command from ANY remote, then HDMI CEC transmits that to AVR or TV. You could connect a Keyboard and it would do the same thing.

The problem is remote commands from 3rd party remotes are not mapped correctly in the Shield to begin with. Same issue with all Android devices and 3rd party remotes.

The other problem with HDMI CEC is its unreliable and a complete bitch of a thing when it starts playing up.

How the harmony control the shield? Ir or Bluetooth?

I have at my living room shield, cable box and a receiver (and tv😅) can I configure the volume always control the receiver? And it’s easy to change control form the shield and the cable box? (My parents want something simple) Also this is what you bought? Bestbuy doesn’t send to my country

Does the Harmony do that annoying "disconnect" to save power after a few minutes? The main reason I love my G20 (vs the shield remote or a firetv one) is that it uses a USB dongle so it bypasses that annoying feature of the shield. Hitting a button then waiting 5 seconds for it to happen is a deal breaker for me.

thin_king980

Has anyone else tried the Caavo? I know it’s pricey but it does everything better than the harmony for me.

I've posted about it before and I'll post it again. All for one remote from Best buy. $25. I had to add a Flirc because my Shield is a 2017 model but still. It controls my TV, sound bar, and Shield perfectly. I have 0 complaints. Even having to add the Flirc I'm very happy with it.

Harmony 650/700 is the best because the transport buttons are on the bottom half below the D-pad, not clumsily located on top. Frequently on sale for as low as $25. It's all I use for my theaters.

CEC works fine for me with the G20, power turns on/off Sheild, TV and receiver and volume controls the receiver exactly like stock remote.

Honestly....Harmony hub or bust at this point. Everyone has more than 1 device at the TV. Everyone eventually wants voice control. Not to mention the ease of control. Its a win-win across the board. I control IR fans, fireplace and curtains with mine as well. Ties in really nice with home assistant for great automations.

Max_Roc

Great post. I think I'll eventually enter the harmony ecosystem if they add voice to it and offer some smaller remotes. Don't care for long bulky remotes for my daily driver.

Rumor has it a new Nvidia and remote are coming in September. Can't wait to see the remote. I'm with you on the need for volume buttons but I'd also like to see it have a few programmable ir buttons.
