tbh I only ever use my previous xiaomi tv to watch shows, movies and youtube but I heard the shield is rly good? I won't really use my tv to game tho. Any recommendations would be nice.

If you are not going to game on it save your money and get the Mi Box. It's more than enough for TV shows and movies. The UI is the same on both.
I really don't understand the hate for the Mi box s... I bought 3 of them for my family so I can share my Plex library with them without wondering if it would direct play or not cause it handles pretty much everything except dts hd, true hd and Atmos. But i have a 2.1 audio and it works really great.
Maybe it can have some difficulties to play some high bitrate remux in 4k but for everything else it will do the job easily
Mibox has some annoying quirks
If budget is not a concern then the Shield TV is the best Android TV device, no question (aside from the remote which is actually pretty terrible). The Mi Box S is a capable device if you have budget restrictions, just be aware of its limitations beyond gaming (spotty 4K performance in some apps, can't bitstream HD audio, no official support for Prime Video).
Mi Box S is perfectly adequate for watching videos.
I can't speak for the Mi Box but I switched from ATV 4th gen to Shield 4K HDR last week. It's an incredible box, basically does everything the ATV couldn't: it takes any class compliant usb devices. That's a thing I was passing on with the ATV but I had so many things to try... Hell, I can even connect my usb MIDI controller/Audio interface and run music apps on it! Casting is 300% better than Apple Airplay. While I had older Apple devices (iphone 5s and iPad Mini 1st gen) and that could explain a part of the problem, casting from them to Shield works like a breeze. I also like that when you cast something, the video that was already playing is just paused and as soon as you stop casting it goes back to that video, right at the moment you started casting.
I had a dumb Rii i8 that works very well with the Shield for searches without using the mic on the Shield's remote. It really feels like a mini pc, while the ATV definitely felt like a dedicated entertainment box for people who actually need to have limitations because they're computer illiterate. and wouldn't see the Shield's potential anyway.
I really couldn't be happier!
Shield tv
I have a shield , but recently got a fire stick 4k and I can honestly say for streaming the stick out performs the shield by far .
I have both and the shield is far better. But you can get the mi box at Walmart for $30 sometimes
Shield. No contest.
And now for a completely different IMHO honest, non Fanboy look at both devices, read the following post:
I own a shield and 100% recommend, but if you were happy with your old Xiaomi box and there's nothing you feel like you're missing why upgrade?
Just check out some reviews and see if anything interests you about the shield.
For 1080p and light 4k compressed videos then the mi box is totally fine for you.
For uncompressed 4k and gaming then you need the shield.
The Mi Box was 100% enough for me until I started streaming in 4k. So if you only stream full HD and don't game, then get it and save some money. The Shield is really good though, but no point buying it if you're not going use half its features and performance.
Shield. I tried the Mi Box S and had to return it and get a shield.
It all comes down to how much money you want to spend. If you can spend enough to buy nvidia shield tv, then go for it otherwise go for mi box s.
I have both, shield for my main living room, and mibox (not S) for my bedroom.
I have both. The answer is the Shield. Not that the Mi Box S isn't good, it's just that the Shield has been amazing consistently since the day I got it (shortly after the 2017 release). It can run a Plex media server, you can add a smart things stick, it's snappy and works the way you'd hope a streamer would. And while you're not interested in gaming it does have the gaming component going on...and you can emulate on it.
The mi box has been a nice device, definitely a great value and a worthy device. It's not fast but it's not slow either. It is noticeably slower (or less smooth) than the shield. I'm very happy with mine. I like Android TV better than Roku but my little Roku is probably smoother, but I enjoy my mi box more.
The nvidia shield is literally the best multimedia center around, not only in the AndroidTV ecosystem, if money it's not a problem then it's a no brainer
MiBox is quite capable but the shield can do a lot more..emulation, gaming, plex server, etc
Also lots of folks prefer Ethernet, so spend an extra 10 and get a Jetstream basically same as MiBox with added Ethernet.
the price should come down for the Nividia Shield when the new Shield is released
The only reason you should consider the mi box is because of a tight budget. It gets the job done, but, if you want power, go with nvidia shield
If the Nvidia Shield is afforable for you do it! If not Xiaomi Mi Box S is the best option.
No question. Shield.
If you can afford the Shield, get the Shield. You'll never have to worry about your set top box being the source of any bottlenecks or performance issues. Being able to hook up some USB storage and use it as a Plex server is really nice, too.
Not shield. I got a $30 Android 9 box which plays everything
If only watch videos go for Mi box. Try it at $50 first and then try Shield.
I see, thanks buddy! Thinking between that or the beelink
Have both and would recommend the shield of you want a smoother experience or if you plan to game. Otherwise the mibox is a good option for a basic box. The mi boxes remote also works better. Mi box has an issue with waking up from sleep where it requires re plugging of the power cord. Shields biggest issue currently is its remote and the slow wake-up from sleep (setting in developer options might help at the expense of battery life). So pick your poison.
my biggest gripe with the Nvidia Shield is the remote battery life (at least on the original model). Where most remotes last for months (if not years) on a single set of batteries, my shield remote has to be recharged multiple times a week. I have the original Shield TV, so maybe they've improved the remote on later models, but I kind of doubt it.
Mi Box S is fine unless you want to play high bitrate 4K video from your PC or something (netflix/youtube 4K are going to be fine assuming your wifi signal is ok).
The one thing I would consider a problem with the Mibox S is the lack of either a USB 3.0 port or an ethernet port. This means that even if you use an ethernet adapter, you will only get at most USB 2.0 speed. And USB 2.0 is not really a big difference from wifi (And wifi can theoretically be faster if properly setup). So if your data requirements are really so huge that wifi is not enough, you would want a shield or even a chromecast ultra so that you can use ethernet.
Shield xiaimi is a piece of shit
Americans promote Nvidia is well known. And the Android TV subreddit is full of Shield fanboys.
The difference in app performance is miniscule if you streaming videos Plex, Netflix, HBO, YouTube, etc. YouTube app load 6 sec at Mi Mox and 3 sec on Shield. 4K 60p video 50Mbit plays flawlessly from YouTube or Plex. If you are interested in gaming take Shield if you want a good media box certified and recommended by Google (like Shield) take 3 at Shield's price. Shield is overpriced.
Would you regret spending more money? Or would you regret saving money on a subpar experience?
Your answer lies in there somewhere.
Shield.
I have two Shields and a Mibox and regret buying that pos. It constantly freezes and chokes doing 60fps on Sling. Its the worst tech purchase I've ever made. I'm waiting for the pending Shield refresh and this Mibox is going in the paper shredder. Waste of $50.
Go for the Nvidia Shield TV if you can afford it. I got myself the gaming edition to stream games on it and cut the cord.
The Mi Box S is barely an upgrade from the previous Mi Box. Uses the exact same specs, hardly any updates as the Shield, and still lacks must have video/tv apps such as Netflix.
Shield 110%
