4k Content if output is set to 1080p

by Need4Xbox

Will my 4k movies play in 4k if the output of my Android box is set at 1080p? I don't see any reason to set the output at 1080p when my 4k tv does an amazing job at upscaling.

Yes, you can play 4k video on a 1080p display.. however, a 1080p display wont support HDR.. so if you feed it an HDR source, it will wash out all the colors converting em back to SDR and it'll look terrible.

You feeding 4k video to a 4k tv but outputting it at 1080p cuz upscalers, is just nonsense.. literally the silliest thing ive heard in a while, congrats.

Ideally you want a media player to output video content in its native Frame Rate and Resolution and let 4K TV's upscale any non 4K content using their superior hardware upscalers.

To do this a externally connected media player needs to either auto resolution switch or have a modern GPU with decent inbuilt hardware upscalers.

The Shield can auto resolution switch using the MrMC and Kodi Apps only. AMLogic Chipset devices running the CoreELEC OS also do this correctly.

The Imagination Technologies Power VR GPU's in both the FireTV Stick 4K and Apple TV 4K have noticably better upscaled picture output quality vs what the old Maxwell GPU in the Shield can output.

Apps running on any 4K Smart TV already get all their video content upscaled by TV hardware.
