Is the Mi Box 4k/s still a hot pile of garbage for plex audio issues? Better device to buy?

I remember a few years ago having AC3/DTS issues with the Mi Box 4K and Plex. Those same codecs worked fine on the Nexus Player. A brief google search reveals some people still having these same issues in plex on the Mi Box S so that is years this issue went unresolved. Glad I returned my old mi box 4k, and bought a Shield TV.

Wanted to give a friend an android tv box as a gift, the AirTV Mini at $80 is a bit steep as a small gift, but the $40 price point of the Mi Box is perfect. Any other devices in the $60 or less range? lower the better.

Ideally I'd give him a shield tv, but money is a thing.

I think youre confusing the mi box with other random Chinese android TV boxes...

I've never had an issue with my original MiBoxes with Plex.

Just to point it out

  1. Digital audio is a license problem not the box
  2. If Plex fails to passthrough ac3 it's Plex fault not the box

redream requires OpenGL ES 3.0+. It won't run on Mi Box at all. The Mali-450 MP GPU on Mi Box (old model and S) only supports OpenGL ES 2.0. reicast does run on Mi Box (with its OpenGL ES 2.0 renderer) but all games I tried run poorly and have choppy sound.

I have no issues with AC3 and DTS.

The problems I have come from AAC 5.1 and EAC3. AAC 5.1 only plays the front left and front right audio, nothing else. EAC3 doesn't even work but Plex thinks I can decode it so it doesn't transcode the audio for me.

Simple fix for both is to convert to AC3 on everything using a program like Xmedia Recode which is free to use and does a great job converting.

If you don't need legit Netflix, the ATV certified Mecool KM3 has a more powerful next gen ARM-Mali G31 GPU that is both snappier and uses Open GLES 3.2 vs the older less powerful GPU in the Mi Boxes.
