MiBox S no HDR and 5.1??

by msoika84

Hello there,

i've bought the MiBoxS running latest Firmware (Android 8.1 security Patch May 2019)

Now i'm missing HDR Support and 5.1 sound.
I tried Netflix but no HDR Movie and series are playing in HDR (like Marco Polo) and missing 5.1 Sound.

Does the MiBoxS doesn't support this formats? on the Package is Dolby Digital and DTS Sign with 4kHDR.. PS: got an Android tv(Sony X8505c) and bought the player because of better performance..

I have identical problem with the previous version - Mi Box 3 - which runs Android 8.0.

Dolby Digital Plus works fine when I run Plex, but not when Netflix.

I have TV which supports Dolby Digital, but not Dolby Digital Plus, and a home theatre system which supports pretty much any standard including Dolby Digital Plus of course. No matter how I connect these devices sound is only 2.0 in Netflix. I tried:

- Mi Box -> HDMI -> TV -> HDMI-ARC -> Home theatre

- Mi Box -> HDMI -> Home theatre -> HDMI -> TV

I've read somewhere that Mi Box with sound format set to Auto mode tries to read capabilities of the TV. Well, in my case sound doesn't come from the TV and I have a funny feeling that Mi Box, despite having HDMI-CEC enabled doesn't recognize that and simply assumes that Dolby Digital Plus is not supported. Prior to the last software update I've read that besides PCM and Auto there was also 'Always' mode which many users reported to be solving the problem. The setting is not present now unfortunately.

HDMI-ARC theoretically should allow any CEC-enabled device to learn which other device is used to play sound. However HDMI-CEC specifications are very loose, leaving a lot of room for device manufacturers to implement their own standards. These standards are not compatible with each other and often two HDMI-CEC enabled devices do not work together at all.

I thought I'll share my suspicions as your Sony x850 doesn't support Dolby Digital Plus either and I believe this may be the reason why we don't get 5.1 Dolby Digital Plus in Netflix.

Netflix uses DD+ not DD.

I've managed to get my mibox to passthrough and downmix DD+ --> DD through an optical using Kodi (and only in kodi)

Set the output to 2.0 and allow passthrough on and you'll have the option to enable EAC-3 downmixing.

also it is weird that my receiver is also capable of reading DTS HD audio file and I believed it is passing through the optical (it's an "old" receiver only capable of DD and DTS)

Mine Xiaomi Mi Box 3 and 3S play flawlessly Netflix HDR 4K 4:4:4 10bit and YouTube HDR 4k60 50Mbit without dropping 1 frame using Smart Youtube TV app.

Android TV device will output 5.1 surround audio from video copy protected streaming Apps like Netflix, Prime Video etc - only if connected to a DD+ capable audio receiver. Otherwise expect 2.0 audio.

When devices are properly Dolby Audio licenced, like FireTV’s and Apple TV’s. They can then downmix DD+ audio into DD only audio to be highly compatible with older audio receivers.
