I played Horizon Chase (1.4.4 & 1.5) on Mi Box with Xbox 360 and PS4 controller. Both worked fine. Hotline Miami 1 & 2 also work on Mi Box with controllers when I sideloaded my backups from Shield. Hotline Miami 1 occasionally has graphical glitches, like pool of blood shows up as a black polygon. Restarting the game usually solves the problem.
Not all phone games work on Android TV. It's just the reality. I ran into so many games that seem to run perfectly on Android TV but can't be played. Some just don't respond to controller/keyboard/mouse, or even mouse toggle app, like Leisure Suit Larry, Lost Horizon, Secret Files. Others require multi-touch with on-screen controls, which is nearly impossible to emulate with mouse click, like Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, Gangstar New Orleans OpenWorld.

Although you can play games on the MiBox it is very weak for such use. It is a very good streaming device, however if you want to game or serve you really need a shield or nuc or just something more substantial.
