S is about a year old now, wait and see if there is a new hardware to be released.
Is there anything in particular you are looking at in S.
Do the mi box 3 receive Android 9?
Mi Box 3/Mi Box S is same hardware except for bluetooth.
Not worth it because they share the same hardware, just wait for the Android 9 Pie to arrive, you should experience some improvements, specially in the audio and video departments. In case the update never arrives, then you should be save to upgrade to the S or maybe to a newer version if Xiaomi ever releases one.
