Are there any custom Android ROMs for TVs like Lineage OS but for a SONY TV for example?

by yolofreeway

I own a Philips Android TV but I am not quite happy with the Android version on it. I know that many TVs do not have very good operating systems and users complain about the smart TV features of all the major manufacturers.

However I am curious to know if there is any custom ROM that I could try for my Android TV.

Thanks

No. What are you not happy with

Due to the various different configurations it's extremely unlikely someone developed a custom ROM for your specific TV model.

The Shield TV does, but it's a popular TV box which also has the source code available, meaning it's easy to develop custom ROMs for it. Philips, Sony, etc I don't think has ever made the source code for their TVs available for the public at all.

As well I believe once you run LineageOS you lose HD and 4K copy protected video streaming from Apps like Netflix.

I'm personally using LineageOS-16 Android TV Pie on an fast snappy ODROID N2:

It shouldn't be possible due to Android Verified Boot https://source.android.com/security/verifiedboot/avb

The only ones I think are the shield TV and the Nexus Player. Smart TVs won't have the source code or dev scene to generate custom ROMs

From a pure legalese POV, if we have a right to own the device and control the software, this should be okay, no? Law says no warranty voided for jailbreaking and repairing. We have a right to.
