Wi-Fi problems with miBox S

by Ashmedai314

So I got my mom a MiBox S for her birthday, and spent a whole day setting up and trying to make casting from her phone and/or tablet possible. I had to overcome a lot of hurdles. Since the MiBox didn't pick the WiFi well (the router is in my room, while the MiBox and the TV are in the living room), I had to turn my phone's data plan into a hotspot so I could set the whole thing up.

Obviously this is not a sustainable solution. The MiBox itself works - but it's usable only when the signal is strong enough and for most of the time it isn't.

I thought of the following solutions - please tell me which is more promising:

  1. Upgrading router - my current router is a basic 20$ router from TP-Link. A possible solution here would be to upgrade to a better one, with bigger antennas.

  2. Buying a WiFi range extender - about the same price of a new router, but not a guarantee it would work.

  3. Buying new antennas for current WiFi?

Use 5 ghz and change the channel on the router.

You could try this method first to check the signal strength as well as whether there is any interference on the Wifi reception near the Mibox

If the signal is so weak and If you strictly want to use Wifi, then replacing the existing router will be a better investment because if your router has no 5 Ghz, it is a bit too old.. If you can run an ethernet cable from your router to the MiBox and want to keep the router, you can consider buying some ethernet cables plus a ethernet to 2.0 USB (3.0 not compatible) adapter which cost around USD$12/- from Amazon. UGreen has been tested to work.
