[FYI] SmartYouTubeTV Added Support for Channels on Home Screen

by haojiezhu

Latest beta release (v6.17.192) finally added one missing feature that is available to official YT app. Currently, its channels include "History", "Recommended", and "Subscriptions".

You can either enable "Check for the BETA updates" in main settings for auto-update or sideload the latest apk manually ( https://github.com/yuliskov/SmartYouTubeTV/releases ).

The developer of that app is a GOD. That must take a TON of work to keep the updates coming at the rate he's doing.

This is hands down the best addition to any Android device. Using it on all devices, and my kids use it as well....

On my Shield and Xiaomi Mi boxes YouTube freezes my devices, they need unplug when I try play a video with codec avc1 and YouTube didn't transcoded to VP9. Device freeze happens when from VP9 video play avc1 video.

With Smartyoutubetv 2 app crashes after 1 year of use. It changes VP9 and AVC on the fly and fast!

How one guy can do such a great work and Google YouTube team not? For 2 years I reported almost every month to Xiaomi and YouTube that specific problem zero answer.

I haven't any other problem with Netflix, Amazon, HBO, NBA, Vimeo, PLEX. Only after the update from excellent native YouTube app to web based version.

Edit: Channel for Your History too. Respect to dev.

Can you clarify if you mean:

  1. YouTube channels appear directly on home screen

Or

  1. You can have YouTube in your TV channels (ie. Like a cable TV channel)?

If you want to appreciate his work, donation is a nice way.

I must say it's a welcome feature. However, it's buggy (I'm seeing duplicates with each channel). Good effort though and looking forward to the next beta update.

Gee I wonder where they got the idea for channels on the shield? Couldn't be because this already has existed for several months from another developer who has done a better job with it and it works on both the default YouTube app or the Smart YouTube app. Check the Android store for an app called Channels or google Youtube Channels because a dev on Nvidias forums has already done this...but better. His version also works with other services such as Dailymotion and Twitch.

Personally, faced with ads that I can quickly skip or last no longer than 15 seconds or using an application from a Russian developer I choose to go with the real legit app as opposed to living dangerously trusting Russian developers. Who knows what kind of data is being collected by this app from the developer on what you watch. Who knows how he is selling that info.

Anyway this has existed for several months already because someone has already done this. Looks like smart YouTube app is finally catching up.
