NVIDIA Shield Pro (2019) HDR Not working right for me

by _N0sferatu

Maybe someone can point me in the right direction. I bought this to replace a Roku Ultra because I want to be able to play lossless audio. While that works like a champ now HDR does not. Whether I stream from local content (Emby) or from the web (Netflix) I get the same problem. The Shield outputs an "HDR" signal (meaning that the TV says yes this is an HDR signal) but the picture is extremely dull. This happens with HDR and Dolby Vision content. The TV from Netflix sees Dolby Vision but once again extremely dull picture.

The best way to describe it is try to play a BT.2020 (HDR) color space file in BT.709 (SDR) color space. It's like trying to play an HDR file on a PC with an 8-bit (BT.709) setting. However, the shield is sending HDR to the TV. TV says it's HDR and the TV's menus are stupid bright like when it's in HDR mode.

I have tried playing with the settings in the Shield without success. I'm a bit frustrated and wondering if there's something I'm doing wrong. The same TV, AV receiver, and HDMI cables were used that my Roku Ultra used. That device had no problems playing HDR from Emby or Netflix.

TV: Sony XBR75X940E

AVR: Yamaha RX-A1060

I've tried plugging in the unit directly into either the TV or the AVR. Same result.

Have you enable Enhanced format for the HDMI input used on the Sony TV ?

It's a known issue that has affected even the older Shield when 8.0.0 was launched and was fixed in 8.0.1

On the 2019 Shield the 8.1.0 release doesn't include the fix, and you have to wait for the fix to be pushed to the new Shields as well.

Until that, as a workaround, you must disable "Match content colorspace" feature and manually switch from Rec.2020 to Rec.709 depending on what you're watching.

Hey have only come past your post and experiencing a similar issue. Spoke with NVIDIA and after trying everything, they offered a replacement. I'd you ever solve the issue?
