Cheap (but decent) Android TV box with Ethernet port?

by moukrea

I'm looking to offer an Android TV box to my step family for Christmas, to share with them my movie library (stored/streamed and transcoded through Google Drive, using Kodi as frontend and a multiuser MySQL database). In that regard, I know the Shield TV is the way to go, but don't have a spare 160€/220€ (mini/2019 rev respectively) to spend in that regard (and I personally use the 2017 rev).

They have a crappy WiFi signal in their home, but they have HomePlugs to fix this issue, which is why I'm looking for and an Android TV box that has Ethernet to get the stream flowing

It won't have to play 4K HDR content @ 60MB/s or anything like that, has their broadband isn't powerful enough anyway (they're countryside in a "not-so-well" covered area), so they'll transcode everything down to their very limited 8Mbps broadband. I know it's so awful it hurts my eyes, but I actually gave it a go (through WiFi in their best covered area) and 1080p Google Drive transcoded video seamed to play just fine, and they also watch Netflix/WebTV...

So I need a TV Box where I can install Kodi/Netflix/Molotov.tv with an Ethernet port that just handles 1080p (4K/HDR would be a plus, but not required) and that's pretty much it!

Oh yeah... If the price could be max 60€ that would be great, and I don't mind buying them from China or whatever else (as long as I receive it before Christmas though, in France)

Thanks!

Current inexpensive devices with ETHERNET port and Netflix certification are:

- Engel EN1015K (it's the Ematic Jetstream opposite with different name for the Europe market)

Current inexpensive devices with ETHERNET port and without Netflix certification are:

- Mecool KM3: http://www.videostrong.com/Google%20Certified/100.html

- Mecool KM9 Pro: http://www.videostrong.com/Google%20Certified/98.html

You can add a USB Ethernet port to basically all of em, even if they dont have one already.. I put em on MiBoxes, Nexus Players, and Fire4k's.

Netflix means you need a real AndriodTV box and not a knockoff china box running mobile android.

8Mbps is not awful for 720p and 1080p streaming. That's perfectly fine for one single device. Netflix, Hulu, Prime... They all work as intended with 8Mbps. You only need more than 8Mbps if you want to stream in 4k or if you want to use more than one device with the same connection at the same time.

The Jetstream is what you're looking for. It has an Ethernet port and it is Google and Netflix HD and UHD certified. All the streaming apps work just fine in 1080p and even in 4k. The box is not good only if you want to play or stream huge 4k HDR files (over 60GB).

It is a Walmart exclusive box, but you can find it on eBay for less than $50 (new). I imported mine a couple of months ago (I live in Latin America).

You could consider an used Fire TV Box 2nd Gen. It has Ethernet port and pretty much everything you're looking for. It is quite powerful for a Fire TV device (only surpassed by the new 2nd Gen. Cube).

Avoid the 2GB RAM Mecool Classic, it has rubbish, poor WiFi

The S905X2 chipset device are noticeably snappier vs the older S905X, plus S905X2 will be running a more optimised Android TV Pie 9.0 OS.

Beware not all device support Android TV Netflix streaming.

The Jetstream 4K Ultra is released as the Engel EN1015K in Europe:

If you wanted HD Netflix and Ethernet in a decent device I would get that.
