Is nvidea shield better than built in?

by lixenstrand

Hi,

So black Friday is coming up and I'm going to be o get a new TV (and maybe nvidea shield). I love android TV but I've had a Sony 2015 version and it been soooo laggy and shit that I now is thinking to just buy a Samsung TV and an nvidea shield.

To my question is nvidea really all that good or will I experience lagg and other stuff when streaming 4k and local 4k (kodi)

Thanks in advance

Better yes, needed probably not.

Android TV (8.0j on recent Sonny models is a wast improvement and works quite well: for most uses you don’t need an external box.

Save your money: given Sony poor track record for updates, you may need to buy a box in the future.

Unless there are actual TV reasons, upgrading to 4k or HDR or something like that, get the Nvidia shield first you may not need a new TV.

Shield TV is really that good, the fastest tv box and does everything you could want from Streaming to Emulation to Kodi etc. Even if you get a top end 4K TV like the LG C9 OLED that now supports 120Hz and G-Sync the Shield TV is still worth having.

Haven't used external Android boxes, but 2018 Sony TVs are quite good, compared to 2015. I have xf900 and it's snappy enough for me. Mostly using for Youtube, Netflix or streaming over DLNA, Chromecast sometimes. It's still Android, but got used to it. Latest versions (like G series) has even more powerfull hardware. I think (good quality) external boxes will be better in performance, but I like when everything is in one place, no cables and controlled with one remote. Also, check reviews on youtube to see how fast everything does react and is it good for you.

It's that good but is audio a concern that's the main reason I need it

I still get updates for my Shield TV (2015), and it still keeps up.

You'll at most get 1-2 years of updates for a smart TV. That's especially bad when using a smart TV with a non Android OS. Because you'll never get a broad selection of apps and the manufacturer might ditch support for your favorite app.

I have sony ag9 and i prefer it to an external source. Im gonna try the new shield perhaps, only for dolby vision playback of mp4 single layer which i dont know if androidtv will get in the near future(?) Other than that i really like internal apps

I have 2015, 2018 Sony TVs and an nVidia SHIELD.

My wife prefers the Sony TVs because the experience is built in and there is no input switching. The 2018 is a much smoother experience than the 2015. The SHIELD runs amazingly. nVidia also delivers updates in a very timely manner and has supported it with major version updates for a long time. The 2015 received a couple of major version updates, but it is done now.

TLDR: if you prefer and integrated experience go with Sony, if you want the best performance and updates go with nVidia SHIELD.

I remember when I got my OLED TV. I was like, why would I ever need an Nvidia Shield, I have webOS and it does everything I need.

Then you get an Nvidia Shield and realize you were previously living in cell #245. You just crawled through 500 yards of sh*t-smelling foulness that can't be imagined, only to emerge and feel the endless rain of features and updates battering you across the face. You have spent years longing for this kind of freedom, but didn't realize it could be a reality until now. The only thing left is to leave your knowledge under an oak tree in the hopes that others too will follow you to the beach in Zihuatanejo.

I have the Nvidea shield and I really love it but I think it's fair to point out that your internet speed is also a big factor. I can't get very fast internet speeds where I live and it struggles with kodi content. This has nothing to do with the shield though.

If your speed is above 25MB/s the shield will work great I think.

ALL smart TV’s have only 100Mbps LAN which is not sufficient for high bitrate UHD Rips that have HD audio.

Anything locally streamed over WiFi can have mixed results as well.

Just get a Nvidia Shield if you don’t want to ditch your current TV.

Personally I would get a LG C9 OLED if buying any 4K HDR Smart TV, plus you get DolbyVision.
