Does Google enforce any update guidelines for Android tvs?

by albus_severus_nyc

I've seen a lot of posts here about Bravia tvs not being updated in years. I was just wondering if there are certain update guidelines that should be followed before Google certifies a brand with Android tv? Like the manufacturer has to provide at least one major os upgrade and consistent security updates?

No. It's the wild west.

Google doesn't provide consistent updates. It's almost abandonware.

my experience is that Nvidia keeps up with both Android operating system and AndroidTV app

BatTechCrazy

No, which is why I switched to Apple TV . That and using Android TV on my Sony 4K left a very bad taste .

Google requires updates for three years but they don't appear to be enforced.

What I do not get is why the updates are not coming through OTA as they should. I had to manually update to Oreo on my XF90 and again recently with the latest update. The Oreo update from Sony was supposed to be sent to TVs since this summer. Even the guys in the shop where I bought it advised me against doing manual updates. This is actually crazy since the Oreo update brings a lot of improvements, at least on the 2018 Bravia TVs with Android.

I am so fed up with my experience of Android TV on my new VU 4K TV (Premium Android!), I wish I hadn't went the route of Android TV altogether.

> Amazon Prime is not officially supported (so the apk which I use, doesn't play 4k content [although finally found an apk which works!]

> Play store is garbage

> No official browser is supported, only handicapped browser are there (like no direct URL, only can search), which runs on some kind of crippled implementation of chrome

> Can't remove google apps like Music, Video from homescreen (they always come back even after removing)

> Sometimes the video starts to stutter, when changing volume from the TV's remote

> Volume automatically lowers after few hours (to protect our fucking ears?, like in Android phones!)

Only plus is the video quality (thanks to the brand, not OS), Chromecast (although screen mirror lags) and Voice assistant (which works good).
