Disney Plus on TCL Android TV

by ozGremlin

Hi all,

Has anyone managed to get the Disney Plus app to install on a TCL Andoid TV? Bonus points if you are in Australia.

I've got my TV up and running with Android TV 9.0 and everything else works basically the same as my nVidia Shield, but the Disney Plus app is missing from the Google Play store. I'm trying to work out what the secret sauce is.

Anyone?

I'm in Australia and found it in the play store without any trouble app runs fine until you realise that the sound doesn't work properly. Gets background sound but no voices.

I have the same TV model in New Zealand and have the same issue. I was able to sideload and the app loads and I can log in and view menus, etc, but when I open a movie to play I just get a banner image and title, nothing to play

I managed to get in touch with TCL support, and at first they just said that it should work, but once I pressed a little more they said "I have just been notified that some of our models are experiencing issues with Disney+ and unfortunately yours is one of those models. HQ is currently doing its best to try and get those issues sorted out so please be patient."

I’m in New Zealand but I believe we have the same models as Aussie. I have 55X4US with the Disney+ app installed and working with no issues. I went into the Google Play Store on my phone, searched for the app and selected my TV as the device to install it to. No issues.

So, as near as I can tell, my TV reports to the Google Play store as a "TCL BeyondTV". (For context, my Nvidia Shield reports as a "Nvidia Shield Android TV") I'm not sure what mechanism is used to determine what apps are compatible with that device profile, but it doesn't seem like something that Google would be assuming responsibility for. It's your typical first-world problem, but it gives me something to keep me occupied.

Thanks again for the various input - I've sent a message off to TCL support in an effort to get someone to take a look. I'll update when I get a response.

Well I got a same-day response from TCL Support:

"Yes the tech department is looking into these issues. For now you can stream Disney+ from your device to your TV via chromecast until an update arrives."

I also got this:

"Regarding Amazon Prime, please call our after sales team on 1300 738 149 between 8:30AM to 7:30PM on weekdays & 10AM to 7PM on weekends. Alternatively, you can email service.au@tcl.com with your queries."

I'll update you with my progress along this adventure.

Well it's been a few days, and I've had a couple of rounds of interaction with the TCL Service folk. They've been pretty responsive in getting back to me, but approaching completely ineffective where it comes to actually addressing anything.

As near as I can tell, TCL's stand with regards to both Amazon Prime and Disney+ is that you can install the app on your phone and cast the video to the TV. They are showing zero interest in getting the apps to work natively on the TV,

I'll update if I find anything different.

I am in Australia also. I have installed it on a TCL 65C2US (Android) straight from the app store nil issues at all and works fine. I installed it on a TCL 55P8M (non Android) straight off the app store nil issues installing it, though it will not play any videos.

You should be able to stream to your TV from your phone or find the setting that connects directly to your device from the TV if it is an Android device.

Just coming back to an old thread in case someone ends up here via a google search.

My TV is now fixed.

My TV shipped with a version of the firmware that was v187. (It shows up on the TV as Software Version: V8-R851T02-LF1v187.008562 where v187 in the middle there is the important bit) There are later versions (v237 and v288) available from TCL where the latest one will give you (Amazon) Prime Video AND enable Disney+ to be installed normally.

Getting TCL Support to send you the link to this firmware is likely to be your only challenge.

Good luck.
