Mi Box S and HDR playback on Google Play Movies and YouTube.

by Kenzibitt

So I was made to understand that Google does not support HDR playback on the Mi Box S despite the box supporting VP9 Profile 2, hence me never getting HDR playback on any of my Movies played on Play Movies and YouTube. I lived with that... watching all my 4K Movies in just 4K and no HDR.

I just decided to watch John Wick 3 today and it played in 4K and HDR (brighter screen and beautiful). Basically all 3 of the John Wick movies (out of my 70 Movie Digital collection) play in 4K and HDR on Play Movies but not YouTube.

So what is happening here? If Google doesn't support the HDR on Mi Box S;

Why are the John Wick Movies playing in HDR.... especially on Google Play Movies?

Also why not YouTube since they from same company?

What's so special about John Wick Movies that allow them to paly in HDR....that the other 67 movies don't have?

A little confused here about all these support and licencing, any info will be greatly appreciated.

Side load Smart YouTube TV app. It's a modified version of YouTube with many options and HDR support making Mi box automatically switch to HDR. Also supports auto frame rate switch.

Google Play movies and Netflix they give me HDR.

Might have something to do with Google Play movies finally supporting the HDR10+ standard: https://www.engadget.com/2020/01/07/google-play-support-hdr10-plus-dolby-vision-alternative/

Although the Mi Box S itself is limited to the older HDR10 standard, but even then Play Movies supports the HDR10 for HDR content. What TV are you using?
