External Hard Drive, Sleep Mode, noise

by Breitenband

Hello! Ive bought a Mibox for my Bedroom. Since I wanted to use it as a Media Player I connected an external Hard drive to it. So far so good. But when i turn off the Mibox (sleep Mode), The Mibox keeps the Hard drive "alive" - so about every 30 seconds the Hard drive starts and makes this typical "booting" noise.

Do you know how I could fix this Problem? Is there Any way to shutdown the Mibox?? I cant use a USB stick (capacity).. Thx!

This happens with my android box too. The only solution I found was to turn off the android box and not put it it sleep mode. It takes 20 seconds longer to start up, but I get a good nights sleep.

Do not use a hard drive, the usb port goes on low power. This is needed in cases where a wireless 2.4ghz remote is used (I have a mini wireless keyboard I use when doing a search in Netflix, which does not support voice assistant.)

I suggest using an external SSD instead.

This also happens on my usb drive.

Mi Box doesn't complete cut off power to USB port in sleep mode and there is no option in settings to achieve that. Even if you un-mount the drive, it's still powered on. You can use a USB hub or USB HDD enclosure with its own power switch.

Whats the brand/model of the external harddrive? Seagate has a software that you can change when the drive go to sleep mode. Some drivers are not affected by the host computers power settings.
