I’m sick of missing my tv shows. Is there a way to record tv shows when you’re not home, without using your home

With Android TV, I'm not sure. However, it's relatively easy and cheap to plug a tuner into a Raspberry Pi, throw in LibreElec or a similar media-center style distro, install a PVR software and set up external access.

The country I live in uses DVB-T for TV broadcast; USB tuners are very cheap. TVHeadEnd is a nice PVR software which even has a nice Android client that let's you browse the TV guide and schedule recordings. I set up a VPN which allows me to remote into my internal network from outside.

For bonus, I set up Jellyfin which provides a very nice media-center server and transcoding. I can connect to it (with the VPN, also outside my network) and stream any of my media and TV.

It all depends a bit on how you get your TV, though. DVB-T is very nice, open and simple.
