Any update on a Mi Box S Hulu fix?

by stubborntrap

With the update of Mi Box S to Android 9, it broke Chromecasting & Hulu constantly freezes no matter what I try to do. I fixed Chromecast by just resetting the box but I'm limited to only casting Hulu to the device not streaming it natively because it simply refuses to not stutter. Anyone have any insight or fixes?

Do we even know if Xiaomi is working on a fix ?

Might be a dumb question but have you tried updating it? I had to uninstall Chromecast and install it again for it to work so have you tried that?

Updated mine and Hulu and Netflix both freeze.

Been battling this for a couple months (since the update to 9), including an hour on support w/ Hulu. Note that overall the Mi Box was laggy and hanging too.

Hulu symptom = video plays for 5s, then pauses while audio continues on, then video plays again. Rinse and repeat.

Today I:

  1. factory reset mi box s
  2. tried latest: Hulu for Android TV 80A70EF7P3.6.153 (fail)
  3. side loaded older versions consecutively until videos played.

I went from:

  • Hulu for Android TV B92B709AP3.4.14 (fail)
  • Hulu for Android TV B6F128AEP3.2.39 (fail)
  • Hulu for Android TV 2.1.3 (success, for now)

No idea if the factory reset fixed the overall issues w/ 9 yet.

Hulu Android TV app on Mi Box S plays for 5 seconds then video pauses, then picks up again about 3 seconds later, repeated behavior. The audio plays fine the whole time.

Downgraded to 2.1.3. That version works

Recently I got the idea of installing those streaming apps I love into a streaming TV box/stick so I can watch them in a bigger format. Roku TV is great and popular, but Android operating system is best for what I got in my mind, it is flexible and has a wide apps support. So I decide to bought a Xiaomi Mi Box S with Chromecast .

I has Hulu service as part of my cellphone’s unlimited data plan, so I configured everywhere I can. When I decide to configure it in the Box , I realize that it didn’t come with the Hulu app. I tried to download it from the Google Play store but it was like “banned to find it”.

I logged-in in my computer into Google Play using the same account registered in the Box and seek the Hulu app but when trying to send it to the Box , it appears gray-out with the message that “it is incompatible” with that device.

I decide to install manually the Application Install Package (APK) using an USB flashdrive, but even that the Box reads it, content wasn’t available. Then I tried to use Google Drive to install the APK directly by syncing files between the computer and the Box , but Google Drive wasn’t available in the Box , also “banned to find” with Google Play app installed in the Box , even more, I couldn’t use the computer’s Google Play to “send it to install” to the Box .

Well, that’s when I did a little brainstorming to the following solution that I like to share which worked to install Hulu to the Box without hacking it, I simply used logic :

·        Download the Hulu for AndroidTV APK file directly from Google Play using this site: https://apk.support/apk-downloader (follow site instructions)

·        Install in the Box a file manager with cloud storage (Google Drive, Dropbox, etc) support. I will use X-plore .

·        Using the computer, create a folder in Google Drive and move Hulu APK file to it.

·        Use the X-plore app installed in the Box to navigate to the Google Drive folder you just has created (if don’t see it, give time to sync between devices).

·        Look for the Hulu APK file and select it to install it; if an “ unknown source installation ” security message pops up, select the setting buttons on that message and give X-plore privileges to install apps. Try it again and this time installation should success.

·        Configure your Hulu account and you’re done. ENJOY IT!!

Use the same principle to add “other” streaming apps to the Box as I did. So why living submitted to and strangled by pay-TV companies??, when you can have a FREE controlled full entertainment world in this hand-palm size portable box .

Well, those are my 2-cents; hope my knowledge-share helped at least somebody…..

Note: I jumped some steps that are implicit, like: login using your Google account, etc…

Reply me if detailed instructions needed…

oh good, i thought this was just me. freezes 1/3 of the time it goes to commercial. happens on my LG Hulu app too, except it eventually unfreezes and the audio gets out of sync with video. Maybe a common pattern of Hulu making a shit app.
