A button mapper app will solve that issue. I do this on mine, works like a charm
I didn't know that Shield is the only Android TV box that implements Android's Recents function; that sucks.
There is another possibility. Plug a USB keyboard in. What happens when you push Alt-Tab?
(I love having the "Prev Ch" button on my remote send Alt-Tab to Shield, and Recents when long pressed.)

Double tap home button to see the recent apps. You can also kill background apps after doing this.
