Youtube Tv app on android projector?

by fanisp

Hi guys - I got a Chinese projector to test and it runs a version of android 8.1 i believe - it's actually not too bad and i am a newbie - so not sure if this is relevant or you can help - i managed to install aptoid and already downloaded some apps - the smart youtube tv app works perfect but i can't get the youtube tv app to work - it installs but it brings a playback error - any solutions to that?

My guess is Netflix wont' be working either.

if anyone else is using a similar setup feel free to suggest any interesting apps. Thank you so much!

You won't find much help here, this sub is dedicated to official Android TV devices such as the Nvidia Sheild, MiBox, or a handful of other devices. And that's mainly because most of those Chinese boxes just don't have support from Google, Developers, or even the people that make them.

If the projector has an input buy a Nvidia Shield.

As dontgetaddicted said, this isn't really the right sub to ask about this kind of thing. You might try asking at /r/AndroidTVBoxes, /r/AndroidBox, or /r/htpc.

That said, there are a couple of things I can think of that might help with Youtube TV:

  • The maker of Smart Youtube TV has a Smart Youtube LIVE app that might work for you. I haven't tried it since I don't have Youtube TV, but it's worth a shot. https://smartyoutubetv.github.io/
  • If you don't mind tinkering with your device, you might try installing an Android TV-based custom rom, like ATVXperience. That might provide more of the functionality that Youtube TV expects.

As for Netflix, their official app is pretty much a lost cause. It relies heavily on particular DRM keys that have to be baked in by the manufacturer, and they only bless specific devices with those keys. Even some official Android TV devices, like the Razer Forge and the Channel Master Stream+, have gone to market without Netflix support. That said, you might be able to get it working by installing Kodi and the Netflix add-on for that. Check this thread for more information about that: https://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=329767

Buy a Chromecast or firestick and plug it into the projector. Job done.

It will fix your Netflix problem too.
