If you're serious about running your own dvr, I'd suggest using Channels DVR (trial available) - https://getchannels.com/dvr-server/
They support the Shield TV as a backend: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.getchannels.dvr
And, of course, as a frontend: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.getchannels.dvr.app
I've been running it for the past year after being a long time SageTV user and it's been great for us. Let me know if you have any questions.
I have it working with Live Channels, using a 500GB hard drive as adopted storage. I'm not sure if 128GB is enough for the DVR feature to become activated.
You have 4 tuners and a shield with 16GB of memory.
I'm betting the Live Channels app is telling you you need more storage. Probably want to add 32GB to manage one or two shows.
Check out Plex. I paid once for a lifetime subscription. Added my HDHomerun to the app and I'm all set. It saves the DVR recordings to my same network drive that I have my other media on and I really like the guide and interface.
I could only get it to work with the HDHomeRun app(which imho sucks) but not live channels.
