Shield TV vs other boxes like Xiaomi M Box

by Jitterer

Hey guys,

hopefully I won't get blamed by this question because it could be that I'm not the first one who is asking it...

I'm asking me what the pro's of a nvidia shield tv are compared to e.g. Xoami Mi Box. When I'm looking in youtube reviews I don't find them out why to pay 100-150 €/$ more for a shield tv than for the xiaomi box (except you limit the functions only to hometheatre and movie playback, not for games).

I'm glad about all comments with your knowledge. Thx a lot!

Shield is updated way more frequently and is the only Android TV box that has Amazon prime video on it, and generally has amazing support. The mibox had way too many issues when I tried one. So many improvements from Nvidia on shield make it worth it

I have both. I actually have the original Mi Box, the Mi Box S, the Nexus Player, and the Shield. I’d pick the Shield 10 out of 10 times. The Shield is just so much smoother and faster. It feels like a finished product that rarely has any issues. Xiaomi always seems to botch their Android/security updates.

It’s like comparing the difference between a Galaxy S20 and a Galaxy S5. Sure, they both make calls, both play videos, play music, etc... But one is on a completely different level compared to the other.

Spend the extra money and save yourself the frustration. You won’t regret it.

When it comes to speed and performance, Shield is still at the top.

I can't comment on the Shield, but I picked up a MiBox S for $30US when they had it on sale at Walmart. For $30, it has certainly been satisfactory for me; it operates fairly quickly, and I've had very few issues with it. Based on problems people have had with the Android 9 update, I have kept mine on 8.1, however. I don't game with it; if you plan on doing that, the Shield would probably be the better solution from what I've read. For me though, I couldn't justify the Shield price premium.

These days if it is video streaming only you want the snappier S905Y2 chipset devices, which are going to be faster vs the Mi Boxes.
Those new devices are the Verizon Stream TV, the Air TV Mini and the upcoming $50 TiVo Stream TV which will really set the cat amongst the pigeons so to speak in the bang for the buck stakes.

Do you have 4K Remux files and Lossless Audio capable audio gear. That's where the Mibox falls short as a media player. It's fine as a streamer, but so is a Roku Stick+ or Fire TV Stick 4K. Which is really where the MiBox falls in the spectrum.
