Android TV Philips turns on unexpectedly

by gevreyc

I have an Android TV Philips 55OLED854.

For the last couple of weeks, I have found it turned on by itself in the morning a few times.

Does anybody have experienced that and have any idea how to fix that?

You could try unplugging all hdmi connected devices when unused and check if this happens again.

I've suffered this with my ps4 connected to a denon 1400h avr, for some reason, sometimes ps4 turns on my Phillips TV (55pos9002/12). Maybe a CEC compatibility/nonstandard problem?

*sorry for my english

This happened to me. My MI box would randomly wake up and the CEC option to control my tv would turn on my tv.

For a bit I did turn off CEC but that means I had to turn on my tv separately. Pain in the ass.

Updating my firmware in the Mi box fix the issue for me.

Good luck, I hope this helps.

Is there sunlight streaming in a window nearby? Infrared light from sunlight will interfere with IR sensors.

I had a friend that almost ditched her tv because it used to turn off randomly on summer afternoons. Once she moved the tv from facing the window. It was all good.

Disable your wake-on-LAN/WLAN settings maybe

Have you installed a new Android App before this started happening? It could be that an App running in the background is waking it up.

Is the TV setup to automatically check for firmware updates? If yes maybe turn that off and see if it still randomly turns on.

If that isn't it then what I would do is uninstall every app, and give it 2 days and see if it turns on by itself if not then it's probably one of the Apps.

Then maybe install 1 or 2 Apps every 2 days and see if it turns on by itself... If it does then that will help you narrow down which app it is.

I have an Android Philips TV in the bedroom. Used to see the power LED flash to say it was receiving a signal. It would eventually turn on. It hasn't happened since my wife and I upgraded our mobile phones which always sit in an upright wireless charger. We think the phones must have been emitting something, possibly to do with the facial recognition.

I have had this issue as well, Toshiba Android tv One time it happened after I installed many apps, so I simply formatted the tv and issue got resolved

Another time it happened when I enabled wake up on lan and USB option on TV from developer options.

I have no-issue against Aptoide, but how do you guys just download off anyone's store there.. There are countless apps on play store having million plus downloads and were harmful number of downloads does not imply apk is safe :/

I use apkpure for verified non customised apks. Ofcourse when playstore itself has issues no other store can be so safe but still.

Mine used to do this with my hard drive attached. Still does albeit very rarely, like once maybe every 6 months. I just power down everything as in turn off all mains plugs and wait for a minute then back on. Problem goes away.

This also happened to me, I was waking up in the middle of the night with the tv (philips 6 series android tv) starting by itself on a green screen. Fixed it by buying a smart electric wall socket for the tv and turning it off nightly.

My parents had this problem, it's caused by a network update or something by your cable provider. You can turn it of somewhere.

Hello, I'm fighting with this already for months.. I have an 55OLED804/12 and I also did not have this issues before.

I tried so far everything possible.. disabling all settings that would allow the tv to turn on from LAN, Chromecast, etc.. uninstalling all apps.. crypling all features to the bare minimum.. even completely resetting the TV software.. always with the same result. I have also HUE lights in my living room, so not only the TV turns on, but also all my lights.. And it already happened many many days that I wake up in the morning and see the TV and all light on in the living room. I do track my network activity which lets me see how long the devices are running.. and the TV usually turns on around 2am and stays on till 7-8am when I wake up.. (Great way to burn electricity and wear off the OLED screen)..

Here are some observations:

- I have noticed that most of the times my TV starts right after I unlock my Android phone (When the Phone is sleeping, you press the button to turn on the screen and you unlock it to use it). I have no apps that could control the Philips TV other than apps like Youtube or Spotify trough Chromecast, but when the TV is off, I cannot start the TV with any of the apps because the Chromecast icon does not show up (As by default the option to turn on the TV from Chromecast is OFF and I keep it that way). I don't have any other apps that would allow to use protocols supported by the TV like DLNA and such. No specific app needs to be open. When I unlock the phone it usually shows the home screen, and the TV turns ON. My guess is that due to Androids Power saving features (Doze) the apps go into sleep when you don't use your phone, and they wake up when you unlock your phone, and some app is just sending some kind of signal that wakes up the TV.

- I noticed this issue started happening after some firmware update that started showing some UK app tiles on the Android TV home screen.. the apps do not show anywhere else as I live in Denmark where these apps seem to be disabled. (So the previous firmware update before the currently latest one).

- When the TV turns ON by itself, it always seems to go to "Google Play Movies & TV" and it starts playing trailers. When I disable the "Google Play Movies & TV" on the TV, it still opens that source when it turns ON by itself, but the screen stays black without playing trailers. When I have "Google Play Movies & TV" disabled I cannot navigate to it from the Sources menu, yet when the TV turns ON by itself it does show up in Sources and is trying to run it. I do not have an antenna, so the reason why it's trying to run "Google Play Movies & TV" might be because its trying to pick the first available TV Source that is enabled somehow.

- The only HDMI device I have connected to the TV is an Xbox 360 that does not even support CEC.

- Factory Resetting the TV seemed to have stopped the issue for a week or some days.. but eventually it would start again after some time. I did notice this happening after installing the Android TV version of Spotify, but after uninstalling it again, the TV still keeps turning ON when I wake up my phone.

- Philips TV support currently only suggested me to factory reset Android TV, which I did and did not help at all (Even having only the default apps installed and Plex). I'm still in the talks with them, but I don't keep my hopes high here, they usually answer with some standard answers like factory reset your TV or return it (Which I can't because I bought the TV last year)..

Let's hope this will get fixed at some point (Hopefully soon).. I was heavily excited about the Ambilight features of the TV, but if this type of issues come with the Philips TVs, it will be my first and last Philips TV.

Hello,

Last week I bought an Android TV Philips 55OLED706 and I have the same problem: "sometimes my tv turns on unexpectedly".

After some testing, I figured out that this happens every time I use my smartphone Samsung Galaxy S9 plus (not only mine but also my girlfriend's phone which is the same model).

I've decided to disabled all the important functions:

  • disabled WoW Lan
  • disabled Chromecast turn on function
  • disabled Digital Media Render
  • disabled WiFi (I use ethernet cable with static config)
  • disabled HbbTV
  • disabled EasyLink
  • disabled Chromecast from Android TV settings

All these without success. Then, I've disabled also the internet (and removed the ethernet cable) and also remove the batteries from the remote control.

Guess what? My TV still turns on randomly when we use our phones. I made some tests and this happens especially when we unlock our phones.

I've reached out the Philips technical support from my country (Romania, Europe) and they told me that is a known issue with some of Samsung phones (S7,8,9 and Note 7,8,9) where the IR buster is sending random signals. The idea is that all these phone models dosn't have an IR blaster. Maybe is the iris scanner?

Mine just started to have this behavior. It seems that there is no pinpoint to it for now and I will try to get the thread updated to my findings.

Mine has since forever connected a PS5(PS4 previously) and a media server with ubuntu. Recently it started turning on by itself at exactly 4:00 AM and drives me a little crazy. It did not have this issue until 2 days ago. I have a hunch that the reason for this is the "HDMI Ultra HD" setting that I've played around 2 days ago. I've change the setting from UHD 4:2:0 to UHD 4:4:4/4:2:2. Changed it back today and will see if this behavior stops.
