Best Android TV Box for 4k

by LucasansS

Hi! I will soon get the LG B9 4K and I was wondering which was the best Android TV box I could get for 4K movies? I got all stored in Jellyfin on my home server, and I can plug the Android TV box directly onto my internet box by cable.

I heard a lot of good things about the ShieldTV, is it the best option right now?

Thanks for any advices!

Shield TV is the best Android TV period.

Artemis_1

Nvidia shield is the best option right now, the pro not the tube.

Shield if you can afford it or else the mibox or firestick 4k.

Mi Box S for streaming 4K HDR is perfectly fast and capable at $60.

Shield Pro 2019 for the extra mile like emulation, hacks, running it like dedicated Plex server. Unless for just streaming is overpriced. Also it is the fastest media player right now on all platforms.

I have Shield Pro 2019 on OLED TV at living room and all the rest rooms are running Mi Boxes. At Android TV we are lucky having these two options.

Try Mi Box at $60 first and then switch to Shield if you aren't satisfied.

Shield like others have been saying, but it seems impossible to get one at retail price right now due to some sort of shortage. Likely related to Covid.

I bought a Sony Bravia Android TV.. I'll never buy a Android TV again. I paid 2000$ for a Bravia 65'' 4K in 2017 and my TV is not receiving android updates anymore.

We are better off buying an android box, like Roku or nvidia shield. They are less expensive.

nvidia shield > fire tv cube > mi box > fire tv stick

FireTV is not Android TV, anyway it would be my last option because of ads.

Shield pro. It's going to cost you more money in the long run if you don't just go ahead and get it now. I started with Fire Sticks then got the regular shield and soon figured out that I needed the pro all along.

Sorry I can't help you in naming best Android TV box because there's alot of boxes and I got tired going through each pro and cons before making shield tv as best randomly without much comparison.

But I will write to you why I stopped the idea of buying shield tv for my needs.

I was under the impression shield tv is the best and wanted to buy it.

I already have an Android TV (Toshiba) that works amazing but it lags a little on some ps1 , n64 titles and definitely can't handle ps2 , PS3 emulation which I was hoping the shield could do. But alas even the shield can't do these emulations.

So what else can it do exponentially better with all the hyped beef inside.. i don't know, I haven't used any other setup Android TV box. Most Android TV box aren't really Android TV, they are Android based TV box , so keep that in mind.

Shield tv has a better HDD compatibility it seems , so if you plan on storing alot of data directly it does make difference .

My Android TV is compatible with 2 tb HDD , doesn't detect 3 tb . Also some TV box may not output enough voltage to the storage devices and that would prevent a higher storage device from working properly ..

Comparing with my Android TV, no I will now not be buying shield tv, it gives me minute advantage on some games, which I can infact use my Sony phone to play via tvs inbuilt Chromecast.

Check out other post regarding mi box (s or x ) and some issues it has by other users in this subreddit . I was left confused about that device as well, so just opted to stay put until the next real deal comes in 2020

Nvidia Shield

If you want native Android TV there's really two choices. Shield and Mi Box. There's a new player in China call Mecool KM1 but there's zero reviews so far.

Depending on your preference, I can recommend the Mi Box S: It's pretty cheap but has an insane value with 4K capabilities and it's actually a Google Certified Android TV Box, you can get it for $60 or even less. But if you want something high-end and got the money for it, I recommend the NVIDIA Shield TV and there's also a Pro version, pretty expensive but definitely top of line.

I'm sure no one has said Nvidia shield yet. It is the best you can get outside of building your own.

No 1: NVidia Shield ( Best) No 2: Xiaomi Mi box No 3: Fire TV cube 2019.

If you will be only streaming, Shield will be a over kill. Most of the TV's have build in native app or get the cheapest 4K streaming box which is netflix certified.

Nvidia Shield 2019 in both presentations, normal and pro, and if you're not a gamer buy the Xiaomi MiBox S

Speed and snappiness....

Shield > FireTV Gen. 2 > Verizon Stream TV / AirTV Mini > Fire TV Stick 4K and then the 2015 chipset era Xiaomi Mi Box and Jetstream Ultra comes last.

4K High bitrate Ripped content - home network Video Streaming needs a device with Gigabit Ethernet For reliability. Only the Nvidia Shield has that.

Personally if it were me and all I needed was 4K home server streaming I would be buying a cheap, snappy, Gigabit LAN - AMLogic S905X3 chipset device and run CoreELEC Kodi on it:
