Android TV the way to go for watching Youtube on an old TV

by [deleted]

Hi guys,

My mum wanted to find a way to watch YouTube on her "dumb" TV, and she doesn't want do it via the other methods such as streaming from another device. Would buying an Android TV device be the way to go? I'm looking at the Xiaomi one which seems pretty nice, but not sure if I would really need to buy an Android TV Box for this.

Thanks

YouTube works very well on Android TV and the interface is fast, easy to navigate and nice and big so you can see from across the room.
She would also get the benefit of other streaming apps and the Google assistant on the Mi Box S for checking weather, setting reminder etc.

I watch YouTube on my Android TV and remote just like I'm watching live TV. I'm watching on my couch at night before bed for a couple hours. I watch my subscriptions or recommendations... I rarely watch it on a computer or my phone.

You will need some sort of streaming device, whether it's Android TV, Fire TV, Apple TV, Chromecast, or Roku. Your options are basically get a streaming device with one of those OS's, or get a smart TV with one of those OS's.

The Xiaomi MiBox S is a decent option. The hardware is a bit dated at this point, but it works and it's priced well. There are a couple of newer options on the immediate horizon (the Tivo Stream and the Chromecast Ultra) that you might want to look at as well.

I'm quite happy with my Mi Box S, works great for Youtube, Prime Video and another video on demand app of my country. Also Assistant can be useful and the integrated Chromecast can help when someone comes home and want to show you something.

I would get her an Amazon 4k stick. It is one of the few boxes that has YouTube in HD and is also very easy to use. My 8 year old browses it everyday and watches netflix, Hulu, Disney plus and IPTV with no problems at all.

Get a snappy, cheap Amazon FireTV Stick 4K, faster vs a Mi Box with better functionality on it‘s wireless remote.

That 4K Stick had really good AC WiFi too.

Honestly, Roku is the best for older folks while Android TV is more suited for anybody under 65. It has superb Youtube and YouTube casting support. Just remember to buy her a fast device, not the cheapest device so it will last her a long time.
