Casting while using VPN on phone and android TV box

by SirDossa

What do I need to do to be able to cast from apps on my phone to my android TV box while box are connected to a vpn? Is it possible?

Buy a router that has a VPN client. Use that to connect to your VPN service so your whole home is routed through the VPN.

Look for a split tunnelling option in your VPN. This will allow certain apps to go direct and bypass VPN. Alternatively look for a "Allow local access option", this will allow your device to access other devices on your network, even if your VPN is on.

Some VPN apps have an option to allow traffic in local network.

Why are peeps suggesting something that fails the concept of cast.

Casting isn't local device to local device stteaming. Casting is telling the other device to connect and continue stream from a location.

I was even able to cast via VPN to my Android TV , US Amazon content and once the video started playing albeit extremely slow speed, the video continued to play complete while the tv fell back to the non VPN network at full speed. This was strange and I am thinking publishing it here or in future Amazon will fix this loop considering how much they enforce anti vpn setup.

See if you VPN will allow internal connection like pia does

The only options I have in the app are to exclude apps from using it but that wouldn't work as I need BBC iPlayer to have access to the vpn so I can cast the content. Perhaps there is a sort of middleman app I can "cast" to on my phone that will get around it. I'll check.

Other networks settings are these.

Well I figured out a way for iplayer. I have vpn installed on the android box. And then I can open iplayer on the phone and cast so long as I turn off the vpn on the phone. If I want to watch on the phone I obviously need it on. I guess it makes sense. I actually thought I'd already tried this way but I must not have. Thanks for all the tips guys.

As far as I know, vpn should be an issue with casting because they are not using the internet. You are on a wifi network so that is all that matters to casting. You may have an issue with a firewall maybe. I have VPN on everything and never had to do anything special for casting, it always works.
