usally i go through APKMirrir but Aptoide is also great resource but sometimes it breaks the apps with wrong update.

Usually from the playstore. Yeah, the repertoire is small, but that's cause there aren't many apps completely adapted for android TV (well and don't forget the retarded device filtering)

Another option would be to add an APK Downloader add-on to your browser, and then just use it to nab them from the Play Store.
Outside the obvious pirate apps, most stuff that's not on the Play Store are only built for phones, that why they aren't on the Play Store.
On your phone, get a orientation-lock app from the store. Export the app and load it on your androidtv. Lock the orientation to landscape, for example. Apps should now be displayed perfectly fine in their 16:9 layout. I had great results and it does not seem to impact the appearance of the vendor solution any way.
As a sidenote, instead of using third-party sites the safest way to get apks is trough the play store on your phone, then export them with one of the available apps.
