Google app 4.1.0.310049754 freezing Home and Settings

Hi all I experienced this issue updating the Google app for Android TV from 3.14.x to 4.1.0.310049754

My TV is a TCL 32ES560 on Android 9 Issue can be reproduced like this :

  • on the Home Page you invoke the Assistant, either with the voice or the keyboard, if you're using the included TV remote
  • if you do this then the TV freezes for around 2 or 3 min and the TV is completely unresponsive
  • then the TV resumes his operation until you select to invoke the Assistant again .

Side issues include:

  • The Settings\Device Preferences\Google Assistant is unresponsive AND freezes the TV again, just as above
  • Microphone button on the Android TV remote app is unresponsive and causes no reaction on the TV

Did the usual troubleshooting up to factory reset the device AFAIK the only workaround that's effective at the moment is to uninstall the updates.

System and apps are updated. Anybody else had this issue or worked it out?

Exactly! I was going to post this exact thing right now. At first I thought if the Android Pie update that came a few weeks back that caused it or the microphone on remote. Just to check everything I uninstalled Google to factory version and that's when it clicked.

Everything that you just mentioned is happening with My TCL TV as well.

I've not had this particular issue with my TCL TV, but I've had problems with my Chromecast.

I found that installing the full play store, as well as manually updating the Chromecast framework was a big help. You can find the latest versions of both on APK sites..

The latest 2 Google app for Android TV create problems on my Mi Box 3 and on my Sony OLED.

I have reported them and they must put their shit together. For example on Mi Box the latest 2 updates break searching other third party apps like Netflix and Spotify. In the settings of Assistant all apps disappeared.
