YouTube: Age Restricted Content no longer plays

by Widgetcraft

So as of last night the YouTube app on my Nvidia Shield will no longer play "age restricted content." It gives me a warning prompt as it had in the past (annoying), but even after I confirm that I want to continue it gives me another message: "Somethign went wrong. Sorry, this content is age-restricted." and the only option is "Back."

I have confirmed that Restricted Mode is turned off. I have also been able to watch the same video on my PC and phone, using the same account/profile. I tried forcing the YouTube app to close and trying again. I tried signing out and back in. Nothing seems to resolve this issue.

Same here with Firestick, but no solutions found!

What is a video that I could test with? I've never run into this and would be interested to test on my shield and Rokus.

YouTube is doing all kinds of fun stuff with age related content. Kids content simply won't play in mini player anymore, for no reason...

Getting the same issue on the nintendo switch, all parental controls and restrictions are off. Gives the same warning then the error message.

I guess it's not just the YouTube app on Android TV, it's also on Roku. I can watch the video in my browser, but if I try to use a set top box it won't let me.

I seriously fucking hate the state of TV today. I feel like I'm just constantly juggling a thousand different "solutions" and something is always broken. At this point I'm ready to just hook a PC up to the TV and be done with it.

I resolved the issue, but it was not easy. First of all, here is the problem: I was using a Brand account, which was owned by my main Google account, but YouTube/Google seems to treat it as a separate entity. I'm not even entirely sure as to why I had one to begin with. Brand accounts cannot have a date of birth attached, so even with restricted mode off it will still not recognize that you can view age restricted content.

You can migrate your YouTube channel from your Brand account to your main Google account. There are instructions for this that can be easily googled. This moves your subscriptions, playlists, videos... etc. over to your main Google account.

My Brand account seemed to have been the manager of my YouTube Premium Family subscription. After I migrated the channel to the Google account, my subscription was dissolved. I had to resubscribe on my Google account, but fortunately did not have to recreate the Family for whatever reason, everyone on the family plan was still part of my Google account's Family.

I can now watch age restricted content without being prompted on YouTube and can watch it on my Shield once again.

It should be noted that to get through the process of migrating my channel from my Brand account I had to log in with 2fa, which suddenly no longer accepted codes from the Google Authenticator. instead, the only option offered were Prompts, which I was not set up for. To get set up for it I had to download the Google app on my phone and then enable the Prompts on my account.

I fixed this issue by re-linking my YouTube account using the code method instead of the automatic app-on-same-Wi-Fi-point method. Both my band account and Google account show up grouped together in the account selector. It fixed this age issue.

Issue seems to be with the brand accounts, on adroid tv. So what I did, is signed into my google/personal account. Searched up my brand account and under 'Channels' I subscribed to every channel. I noticed brand account doesn't let you set age, like you can with your google/personal. There's just no option.
