4K HDR Content Washed Out Color

by poc1p

Hi , i currently experience washed out color when i play Movies from Mi Box S . The hardware im using is :

And the apps im using to play 4K content is VLC . I notice when i play HDR Content in my TV , the HDR logo is appear when i press "ok" Button , but the color is washed out . Then i try the SDR content and the color is more vibrant than HDR . Also in MiBox Setting i turn off HDR to SDR and vice versa. Perhaps there are setting i missed ? , i already try to Calibrate my TV setting for better color.

Same for me on my Philips TV

No local dimming on your tv, very low peak brightness and it can't show wide color gamut.

Part of the problem is that the RU7100 isn’t a very good HDR TV. It doesn’t have a wide color gamut panel and it can’t get nearly bright enough at under 300 nits of peak brightness. You can try the settings from RTINGS to see if they improve your results.

Have you calibrated the HDR setting? It would need to be done differently than the SDR setting. Also you may need to calibrate each hdmi devices rather than just setting one up and they all stay the same.

Rec2020 material looks washed out on a Rec709 screen. If your screen can't auto detect a 2020 signal then maybe you can force it into 2020 mode somehow... If not and the screen is only capable of 709 then you are out of luck.

I have a cheap Sony with Android TV and have the same problem with everything HDR, either Netflix content or PS4 games.

The image looks very dark and washed out. You can try turning up Color and Brightness settings, but the problem is that HDR content just look worse than SDR on these kinds of TVs.

The problem, I think, it’s that these cheap TV are just not apt for HDR content, specially regarding peak brightness. They just “added” HDR compatibility for marketing purposes, but honestly it would be better to just not have this feature if it can’t be displayed properly.

And the worst thing is that in some cases you can’t disable HDR. You can do it on the hdmi inputs, but not for the built in apps.

It’s a shame because otherwise it’s a great cheap 4k TV and Android TV works pretty well, but it just can’t handle HDR

When I was seeing up my new 4k TV with my Nvidia shield I went into the display settings and found that it wasn't running at the right color settings. I had to buy a new receiver that supported hdr10 to fix the issue.

If your mi box isn't plugged directly into the 4k/hdr hdmi port then I would try that to see if it helps

Same problem with Samsung Q70r. Didn't find a solution yet
