MiBox S overclocking

by Thundeeerrrrrr

Tl:Dr at the bottom. So as someone who has lurked and sometimes posted on this sub I know that I am not the only one who has problems with the MiBox S. So I had this crazy idea of pushing the chip just a little further so I can actually watch in 4K. So my question is if anyone has tried it and if it worked.

So I essentially get micro stuttering every ten seconds when I put it on 4k which is just annoying and really fucks up the immersion. This does seem to me as either a frequency problem where the chip just cant keep up or thermal throttling. So I know that this ist probably not going to work with the current case which is why I will just take it out and put the case away. I will print a new one which will definitely be a frankencase that will include at least a fan. I will have to look through the old cooling stuff from my dad if I can get a heat sink and then design the case around it.

Please don't go to hard on me regarding spelling mistakes I am on mobile and no native speaker.

Tl:Dr Since the MiBox S won't run 4k I will increase the cooling capabilities to make it run faster.

That will do nothing to solve your problem.

4k stutters varies from many things which are mainly network speed, internet speed (if you are streaming), CPU, and how well the app is made.

I have MiBox 3 and I have been able to play 4k on Nova player through SMB. But, recently when I use Kodi, I have been getting tons of problems. I thought it was the network, the files, etc but then the unit just restarted by itself and I knew it was overheating.

I had put it inside the TV console where it wasn’t getting air and it was too much for it. Then I realized that Nova Player has a small footprint compared to Kodi. Thus, when using Kodi, the CPU was overheating because it was at max and it wasn’t getting any air thus everything started to crash.

You won’t be able to OC it (idk if you can), but I would first try to just use any air cooling to see if it will help with the stutters. If it does, then if you can dissemble it without breaking it (which is hard) and make a new case then go for it.

what are you trying to run in 4k, it could be the limitation of usb drive/usb port.

Where is the 4K content being streamed from ?

WiFi or a hard Drive ?

What App is used for playback ?

What is the Display Resolution & Hz set in Android settings ?

What TV is being used, what are it’s Motion settings ?
