Is there anything better than Nvidia Shield for 4K streaming?

by jbart12

I've tried both the new and old models of the Nvidia Shield. Both had issues, though less so on the older model with more RAM. I want perfect 4k streaming from my Plex server with zero delay or lag. And I'd like the remote to work properly. What are my options? I'm not against a dedicated PC if that's what it will take. Thanks for any advice

Shield pro 2019 version is flawless for me. Best device I’ve used and I’ve tried many. Including a dedicated PC which was extremely finicky with audio.

Are you using WiFi to stream?

I use original 2015 shield 16gb with ethernet to my laptop plex server and can play 80gb remux no problem? And use the LG tv remote via CEC. Must be something up with your setup?

Shield 2019 Pro or Apple TV 4K. I have both, and they're both stellar devices. I'd say go with whichever fits in better with your current ecosystem.

That said, even as an iPhone user I personally use the Shield as my primary device. Direct plays almost everything, superior remote, has a built-in Plex server (if you ever want to go that route) and Google Assistant is far ahead of Siri. The only thing I'd give Apple TV the edge on is the fluid interface.

2019 Shield Pro and Apple TV 4k are both basically similar. Just depends on your ecosystem like which phone you have to pair it with.

Shield is the best way to go. I found the Plex app on ATV 4K buffers on bitrates higher than 80mbps.

I had to switch my BIL over to Infuse so he could watch 4K on his Apple TV

My shield on the other hand doesn't break a sweat direct playing all kinds of 4K content.

The Plex app on ATV is much nicer however. Hopefully the upgrade Android TV soon.

The Roku Ultras work well.

Your issue is with Plex not the Shield. It takes a few seconds to load a 4k remux just like it sometimes takes a few seconds on lower res contnet. That Plex being Plex. Try the same files with Kodi and you will see what I mean. What other kind of issue did you have with the Shield?

TheRealSilverBlade

Try Kodi instead.

Get rid of Plex, problem solved. I have zero problems with 4K streaming on my 2nd Gen Shield (hardwired), but I dont use Plex. If either Kodi or VLC can bypass Plex (create a shared folder with one or two 4k videos) and play 4K videos flawlessly, then its Plex thats your problem.

Personally I would avoid Android Everything for seamless home Networked server streaming and run CoreELEC Kodi on an Gigabit Ethernet AMLogic S922X chipset device. The CoreELEC OS is really reliable, fast and snappy. It even does HDR10+

A Bunch of Kodi users go down the PlexKodiConnect route. Google it.

And if you are into Drones that record HLG HDR video like the Mavic 2 Pro - well the CE Kodi combo will do that too.
