Which manufacturers has the best updates

by negative_gradient

Hi,

would like to ask which TV manufacturer has the best update record. Currently owning a Sony Android TV that only had 1 update.

Only have experience with setup boxes, but aren't all of the integrated Android TVs made by the same company anyways?

And from what I've heard the newer Sonys are one of the better options.

Exactly what year and Model of Sony ?

I ask because the game has finally changed over at Sony with the Android TV Oreo and Pie TV’s they launched on their 2019 X85G, X95G, A9G and also all of theIr 2020 Models.

Those specific TV have the much more powerful MediaTek chipset in them and are also Google Project Treble compliant which makes it MUCH easier for developers to now do Android TV OS updates & upgrades going forward.

As an example the X85G, X95G & A9G went from v8.0 Oreo to v9.0 Pie - Android TV in record time in the last year VS what was seen on previous Sony TV models that also had the slow, old and now obsolete MediaTeK chipset in them.

Outside of (Sony) TV's the Nvidia Shield gets the best Firmware and OS updates and upgrade support.

It’s not all about who gets updates first either. It’s the quality and bug free status of such Firmware and OS updates that really matters As well.

In terms of which one releases an update to a version currently in the market:

  1. Videostrong: The Mecool KM3 and KM9 Pro are now on Android 10, I bet the KM8 will be updated pretty soon as well.
  2. Nvidia: I guess they are going to update their devices to Android 10 in the coming months.
  3. Ematic: The Ematic Jetstream was recently update to Android 9 and it has been a good update so far.
  4. Xiaomi: After the official and buggy firmware release to Android 9 for the Mi Box S in the past few months, the original Mi Box is still on Android 8, rumor has it they are working on Android 9 but nothing is confirmed as of yet.
  5. The rest of the bunch are still updating to Android 8 like some Sony TVs or stuck on an older version like the Channel Master Stream Plus which is still on Android 7.

I wouldn't say TVs, because once a TV is made, manufacturers have no incentive to update them. They are just displays. I would much rather worry about getting a box behind it to display something for you. Like any number of Android TV boxes (Nvidia Shield, Amazon Firecube, stick, or RokuBoxes). Or if you are an apple person.... Apple TV
