Will mi box s support x266 codec ?

by aironelotto

Just wondering if mi box s will intact support the new x266 codec or will it require hardware support ?

No, it will require a new device with hardware support. I wouldn’t worry about it though as its years away from wide adoption. In fact Fraunhofer themselves have yet to even release any decoding or encoding software, only the codec specification has been completed at this time.

The other issue for the adoption of H.266 is its royalty free competitor AV1 which is much further along in development and already has hardware support in chipsets from Mediatek and Amlogic. AV1 is backed by some of the biggest names in the industry - Amazon, Cisco, Google, Intel, Microsoft, Mozilla and Netflix - and has already been rolled out by YouTube and Netflix.

No, no current devices will as it requires new hardware with built in support.

Software ecoding/decoding will probably work but without hw support it will be useless as the mibox is way too slow. A high end intel/amd cpu is probably needed for sw to work well.

Highly doubt it seeing that this codec in two weeks old from release. On top of that there's a good chance a license fee has to be paid to use it and Xiaomi won't pay it.

Best chance to get it on Android TV will be the shield because frankly it's basically the only box with enough horsepower to decode it I bet.

It's something to bother you after 5 years.
