Return Android TV or keep?

by alijam100

Hi, so a couple of days ago I bought an Android TV in the uk. It's a sharp 50". It was about £330 on sale down from £370. It's okay but not amazing.

The first issue I find is that the edges go washed out and a little blue. It's not really noticable watching normal content but when it's a dark scene I find it a little distracting. I don't think this is backlight bleed as it seems to move with me (e.g. I move my head to the right, the right side gets better and the left side gets worse). I think it's the viewing angles that are just crap (as when I view it from the side it's a similar thing) I'm also sitting about 2 meters or so away. Am I just too close? Or are the viewing angles just so bad that the edges do this? Or do all led TVs do this?

The second issue is that it's a little slow at times. Occasionally the Netflix app will stutter; not all the time but about 2-3 times every hour. Sometimes the audio will go out of sync after this. So I have to pause and play again. And sometimes the TV takes a minute to respond to things in menus.

Thirdly in Netflix, as the subtitles come on and off, the screen tends to brighten and darken which is really distracting. Is this a Netflix issue or a backlight issue? I've heard people say each. Some say it's the backlight having to match the brightest area, other's say it's a Netflix overlay that is messed up. Some people say to just turn subs off but I struggle to hear things a bit.

Fourth is All4 casting. For some reason the adverts screw up. When it gets to the advert it will just pause itself. You hit play and it does nothing. You have to uncast and recast every time for it to work again. I ended up shoving my old Chromecast in the back just to cast channel 4 stuff (works fine on there). The all4 app does work on the TV so I can use that(didn't before - had to factory reset after 2 days of owning to get it working)

My overall question then is should I just return this TV, get a non androidTV and buy a Mi Box or something? Or should I keep it because these problems are normal - then just get an androidTV device down there line when this one slows down?

I'm hoping to not spend too much more overall than the price I paid as I'm on a tight ish budget and my old tv needs to go back to it's original owner (my mum lol). I know cheap = crap most of the time but was hoping to find a balance somewhere. I can't find many TVs around this price range that are from the better brands. There are a few Hisense ones I've seen but don't know if they're actually any good as I don't know the brand very well. Thanks!

I had the exact same issue.

I decided to get a dumb (non android) TV but a top of the range model. From 2019. Paired it with a shield 2017 and its been perfect ever since!

Never ever buy a tv based on the os it runs. You can always buy another box but the screen itself you’re stuck with.

To state the obvious, you bought a cheap TV and its not performing like a more expensive TV. I have two Sony Android TVs that were closer to $2K each and the Android TV part works pretty well, and the picture is great. So this isn't an android TV problem, its a cheap TV problem. If you lower your budget by the price of a MiBox, you'll have even less to spend on the TV. You might want to look at the https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/best/budget or other review sites that rate budget TVs. Ironically a Hisense is at the top of their list. For the money you are spending, you are going to get "ok, but not amazing" from any brand. All of that said, the Android TV part of my Sonys is not as quick as an Nvidia Shield or even a Tivo Stream 4K, but its acceptable and everything works as expected. We have moved to Apple TVs for them, but used the native Android TV for a long time and it was fine.

Get a separate box to run Android TV. Shield (old or new) plus a decent TV will give you the experience you are looking for.

Unfortunately a Nvidia Shield is NOT going to improve the backlighting and local dimming issues you are having on that cheap TV. That is squarely a TV issue you have there. A Shield is not going to improve picture quality. Return the TV, get something like a decent HiSense....

As you are in the UK you would be better off getting a cheap TV and then get much better Apps support locally from an Apple TV 4K. You really need to do your local Apps support research for various ecoSystems before buying.

The major advantage as well is that the Apple TV has much better auto Frame Rate Matching for local / Euro. 25/50 fps content AND then playback of 24p content from Netflix. If you want smooth video playback in lots of streaming Apps for your specific part of the world an external Android TV box is not going to give it to you.

I am in the same situation in the Australasia region requiring the same Frame Rate Matching Apps support.

Such Frame rate matching support is better on the ATV 4K VS any external HDMI connected Android TV device.

Return it and wait for next deal.
