Is there an AndroidTV box as fast or faster than Shield?

by eddlang

Fire TV Cube 2019 is close CPU wise but still fairly behind GPU wise. Also, I'm more interested in non-brand boxes, as in not tied to an specific content provider.

Shield is the most powerful androidtv based box available.

No, there isn't.

The Shield TV is the baddest Android TV box out there. I didn't understand your comment about wanting "an open box" or being tied to an specific content provider"? All Android TV boxes would of course be running the same Android TV and the platform allows for any content provider that wants to support it.

Amlogic S922x will be faster as in CPU but will be left way behind in GPU, though according to geekbench its mali g51 is faster.

No, there's no Android TV Box that can compete with the Shield. If you want something of that power and quality outside of the Shield the only real alternative is the Apple TV.

The ARM Mali G52 GPU in the AML S922Z equipped 2nd Gen. Fire TV Cube may not be faster but you do get better HDR support on that platform, namely VP9 profile 2 decoding for 4K HDR YouTube and HLG HDR support.

Plus the AMLogic S922Z chipset is HDR10+ capable for Prime Video content.

I have an ODROID N2 and occasionally run a Lineage - Android TV v9.0 Pie image on it and that combo is fast, snappy and has no lag at all. It has no DRM or HDCP so there is no copy protected App streaming possible unfortunately.

It‘s a pity someone has not gotten a 922X device Google certified and approved because then you would have a really decent Shield competitor.

And competition lowers prices in the long term.

I doubt those buying 2020 Sony X90H TV’s that have a 4xA73 CPU package and a ARM Mali-G52 GPU under the hood feel any need to buy a Shield these days.

Nope, the Shield Pro is pretty much the top of the line.

Although it can't compete with the Shield, the Mecool KM1 is the fastest affordable Android TV device with S905X3 SoC, I assume they are going to release a new one next year with the S905X4 which will sport AV1 hardware decoding.

Teethpasta

No box but Sony's newest TV's have a73 cores so that's faster cpu wise.

This is so annoying, the shields are basically the same as the 2015 version. That was an amazing device and the software and update support from Nvidia are unmatched, but still, by now there should be something better... The Snapdragon 660 in cheaper phones is faster than this.

The AMLogic S922X based devices come close to the Shield, especially overclocked versions like the ODROID-N2+. But that only matches the speed of the Shield.(Review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LfG0oztlmX4&ab_channel=ETAPRIME )

I think I wait for the next Shield or something Android TV 64-bit with a newer SoC.

EDIT: A good consumer-friendly S922X option is the "Beelink GT King Pro".
