Raspberry Pi 3, 3B+ and 4, Can I do Netflix and Amazon Movies, 'wife proof'

by BillyDSquillions

I hope that makes sense to anyone here with a wife.

We have 2 ipads, an iPhone an Android phone we could use as a remote control (or I could buy a $15 ebay one??) but I would really really like to be able to replace my PS4 with one of the 3 Pis in my house (yeah I got all 3 models)

Can it be done reliably? I have ethernet, only 1080p TV etc. Curious how good Android TV on Pi is? Worth wasting my time trying it?

Sorry to bug you guys, I only googled this about 15 minutes ago.

Must pass wife acceptance factor (!!)

Buy a Nvidia shield if you want it wife proof.

Not really. It can sort of be done but it won’t be Netflix certified, so you can’t do HD. Just get a Mibox and be done with it. Comes with remote and is certified, and will absolutely pass Wife Acceptance Factor.

Wife proof i would wait for the upcoming Apple TV with new remote or NVIDIA Shield Pro. Both the priciest but you get the highest performance with Android TV or tvOS and unique features as AI upscaling (Only on Shield). Both is a guarantee of future proof.

since you already have pi's, try r/libreelec or r/osmc. Your TV remote can control pi.

WAF = Apple TV 4K.

ATNAF (Android TV Nerd Acceptance Factor) = Nvidia Shield

Forget about Android TV 1080p paid for copy protected streaming, Netflix / Prime on a RPi.

It’s simply not going to work.

1080p only Android TV on a budget get a snappy $50 TiVo Stream 4K.

It has a great peanut remote and is snappier vs a Mi Box

I have a shield, I purchased a flirc, and repurposed an old cable remote. I have my tv and dvr through hdhomerun and I'm running it all through Kodi as a front end. All of our digital movies and tv are linked in Kodi so all the wife and kids have to do is navigate to it on the screen and click. I'm using the Kodi netflix addon but could easily link to the Android tv app if needed.

It works, it's simple for them... My 72 year old mother can use it... It was a little bit of setup and maintenance for the Kodi stuff but is not hard.

Android TV on the RPi is a non-starter. I love gadgets, too, but it's not worth it if "wife proof" is even a consideration.

I hate Roku, but their devices and ecosystem are about as dumbed down as you can get. If you don't even care about 4K (which I get, no judgment here), then advanced features aren't important and you can get whatever's cheapest.

Android TV isn't complicated, IMO. My wife hates that I've always got a new gadget, but she can navigate all the interfaces we have (Roku, Amazon Fire, Android TV) just fine.

Wtf is wrong with people preserving stereotypes of dummy wives?? Its so condescending and machist to keep using these adjectives. You can just say you need an easy to use solution.

Ps raspberry is far from easy to use in its current state for Netflix

I think you are the one that does not know how to use the technology here. Why involve your wife at all?

The pi heats up quite fast tho unless you have a cooling case, the mi tv stick is cheaper than a mi box at 39$ comes with downgrades such as capped at 1080p 60fps and non upgradable storage so i dont know( bear with me not a native english speaker if i said anything wrong anyways glad to help) hav a great day 👍😇
