Google Duo and a webcam

by KRayZRay718

My son loves talking to Grandma through our Lenovo 10-in smart display. So when Google said they were putting Duo app on Android TV I hopped on Amazon and found an "Aukey" Webcam That was very comparable to the top of the line logitechs that are currently sold out.

I installed the app plugged in my webcam which works. I get a picture but the picture is terrible. Does anyone know if Google will be fixing this down the road? or did I cheap out on a camera and this is the result. I mean it wasn't exactly cheap it was $60 but you catch my meaning would I be better off waiting and buying a Logitech when they become available again or hoping Google will be implementing a feature within the app to help third-party webcams calibrate?

I've kind of been wondering the same thing. I have a 720p logitech from several years back, but it's quality is BAD . Like really really really bad. I'm not sure if it's the camera or the app, but it's essentially unusable.

I would say that the camera has nothing to do with the picture quality but the app itself, in my case I also use Jami and the image quality is better than the one in Duo with the same camera I'm using.

Take into account that the app is still in BETA, so let's hope Google devs improve it over time, other than that, I suggest to send your feedback about your experience with the app so far, connect a USB or bluetooth keyboard to your device to type more confortable, then go to settings -> help -> send feedback.

I just got my new Chromecast gen 4 (Google TV) and hooked up my old Logitech C270 to it. Everything works flawlessly (there's a slight delay to the picture of myself but that's whatever) except for the quality. It's "OK". It looks like 480p or something like that. Not terrible but not great. I found this so figured I'd share: https://www.reddit.com/r/Chromecast/comments/k30rk8/list_of_user_approved_webcams_for_duo_on_ccwgtv/
Hopefully we can get a useful list going.

Cameras on duo on Android still look like trash. Same camera is clear as day on PC

well if you wanna know if it's the app or the webcam, plug the webcam into the computer and see if the quality is still shit or not.

(sorry for the late update)

I posted some more info on the /r/chromecast category. Short answer is the Duo app on the Chromecast+GoogleTV seems super sensitive to which camera you use.

For me, an ancient MS USB cam is clear though very wide angle. An ancient Logitech c910 is very blurry.

A new Logitech c270 is even more blurry. The c270 seems like a piece of junk basically even when using it as a usb cam on a macbook air with FaceTime. Returning it.

Hope they get the camera support worked out and the Duo thing moves to more high quality on the Chromecast and that they published a compatibility list of known ok cameras.

Also wish they had a way to register contacts 'just' for Duo. Not too happy with their all-or-nothing permissions on contacts. They need to have more granular control there.

Not really addressing your question, but you can use Duo on the computer. Duo.google.com
