Just looking for some standalone media player apps....with playlist and nas support

by Oh_No_Tears_Please

Hello!

Recent purchaser of a sony x900h, loving the tv and androidtv.

For most things anyway.

I have a PC hooked up to the tv, as well as a synology NAS on the same network. The NAS is always on, the PC is on a lot, but not always.

I'm especially looking to be able to just leave the PC off more often than what I've been doing previously.

Yes, I have plex. Not sure if I like it though, I've had it for a while and it's great for what it does...but I want something not for streaming, but for playing my own files, locally.

There are some basic apps built into the device even. Music/Tv/Media, for example. But they are all so basic! They don't seem to support playlists, and you can't even do something like play all files in a folder that includes subfolders. (So for example ify our folder system is music/artist/album if you wanted to play all of the songs from a particular artist, you can't...you have to choose an album.

Drives me nuts.

Plex is ok, I'm not really convinced it's a great way to play filles locally, especially of 4k UHD content especially with lossless audio tracks...which is disappointing, but a main complaint I have with plex is it doesn't seem to support the ability to use conventional playlists such as those generated by foobar and the like.

Obviously with external playlists it needs some tweaking, but that's easy to handle with a quick find/replaceall. But it seems plex just doesn't do this at all. Sigh.

Another minor complaint that I have with all of the media apps that I've found so far, there's not an easy way to use the app in androidtv to play music stored on my NAS, without the tv being turned on. There is the "turn picture off" option, which is fine if you just want to press play and never touch it again...but the moment you use the remote to press pause or skip a track...the tv turns right back on.

That last complaint may just not be an issue in the long run, as I am getting a new receiver in a week that I think supports network play(my current one does but I've never used it as previously I just kept the pc running all day)..so it's possible my goals for music playback might be met by the new receiver...but I kinda doubt it will have playback support...it is something that tends to get skipped over.

Any thoughts? Am I asking for something that's impossible and I just need to keep my PC plugged in all of the time?
