New Google TV device for travel use in a hotel room

by Between_3and20

Is it possible to use this in a hotel room? Specifically, out of the box options, not some sort of annoying workaround process. Does it have a browser to get past the hotel security/login page or possibly a process like the firesticks have? Sorry if this has been covered before.

Android TV just loads a browser for the login so it should work.

Get a Travel router and set up all your devices to connect to it. Then when you get to the hotel, you just connect the router to the Hotel internet and you are set.

I found better success with a Roku stick. I was able to use my phone to authenticate against the hotel’s network... most of the time. I picked one up for about $20 at the time.

Sometimes the hotel would have the HDMI ports on the TV locked down, or have the only viable TV input be the coax. Under those circumstances, nothing works (or at least it was beyond my abilities).

Ultimately, I just got used to using my iPad when I travel.

Edit: Short answer is no. To my knowledge, Android TV devices do not have an easy network authentication step for hotels or dorms like Roku and Fire Sticks do.

The Google TV chromecast does have the option to download web browsers.

this doesn't directly answer your question. however what i do is connect my pixel 4 to the hotel wifi and then turn on my hotspot. This will effectively allow me to share the hotel wifi to my other devices through my pixel. I would then have my travel Chromecast configured to connect to my hotspot.

I do think a browser installed before hotel visit is required.

If the hotel WiFi requires a login, usually Android TV will recognize that and ask you to sign in. Then, it should open up the hotel's login page.

Please note, however, I can only speak to my Sony Bravia Android TV line, so your mileage may vary.

You could download a browser and try that. But captive portals are not natively supported like on Fire TV device.
