BBC iPlayer (UK) crashing just after launch (Chromecast with Google TV)

by seAchunu

Each time I open the BBC iPlayer app on my Chromecast with Google TV, after choosing my iPlayer profile and seeing the iPlayer homescreen displayed, the app becomes unresponsive and then crashes, returning me to the Google TV UI.

By a process of trial and error, I've figured out that what triggers the crash is an attempt to navigate (using the CC's remote pad) within roughly the first minute after the iPlayer app opens. If you do this, the iPlayer app crashes about 10 seconds later.

However... if I don't attempt any navigation within that first (approx.) minute after launching, then the iPlayer functions normally.

Anyone else seeing this? Seems to be 100% repeatable for me, across app re-installs and CC reboots.

iPlayer version: 0.4.3

Android TV OS build: QTS2.200917.005.6868541

Uninstall "Button Mapper"...

In previous versions of Android we were able to report the issues directly from the device by selecting the "Send Feedback" option in a menu that appeared after the crash, Google then turned it OFF by default, however, you can bring it back by going to "Developer Options" and search for the "Show background ANRs" option, turn it back ON and everytime an app crashes more than once you'll see the menu again, select the aforementioned "Send Feedback" option, give a short explanation of the issue and hit "send" at the top right corner of the screen. The more you send the merrier.

To help me troubleshoot this, can you check if you have enabled any accessibility services such as TalkBack or Twilight? If so, does the problem go away if you disable them?

Edit: I see in a different comment that disabling Button Mapper resolved the issue. Thanks for the update!

There is also a Android “Refresh Rate” App that will crash iPlayer:

Exactly the same issue here and disabling button remapper solved it. Just gotta enable it again as I prefer my Wolf launcher than stock "Google TV"

hi, just to add yes I'm getting this exactly the same. Can't seem to see any way around it except disabling button mapper, but that's a shame as mapping the 'switch source' to 'next track' is perfect for spotify, and you can set home 'long press' to return to the orig google screen (leaving short press as wolf launcher). so keeping it would be good!

It was really annoying me. But the suggestions about uninstalling button mapper solved the problem. Button Mapper benefits isn't worth the hassle
