I'm stuck using an app from 2014 to control my shiny new Google TV and it doesn't even fit on the screen of my Pixel 4, not to mention that it's still using Android 4.0 home buttons.
The Google TV itself is fantastic but why not update the app?

Google TV came out in 2013. This is Google TV 2.0
I still have my old Sony GTV device. It's just sitting there. Not used for about 5 yrs now.
The remote app is terrible, you type on the keyboard to enter text and it doesn't enter it until you press space. Then it doesn't clear what you typed and you have to delete all the characters
I have the new Chromecast with Google TV. I also own an Nvidia Shield and I've owned the original Nexus Player. I'm actually happy they haven't switched me over to the Google TV interface yet. In my experience, having seen both, the Android TV interface is about letting you watch what you want to watch. The Google TV interface is about trying to sell you things to watch. I don't buy a lot of media. In fact I don't buy media ever except for my one or two subscriptions to Netflix and Hulu, etc. So I find the interface on Google TV rather annoying in its insistence on showing me things to buy or subscribe to. I'd rather see my own media in the recommendations or media that exists on services relevant to me. Until recommendations become more relevant, I'm fine with Google leaving my devices interfaces alone for the time being.
You pay big but you get good shit with nvidia
Ummmm There was a remote in the Chromecast with Google TV box. There is the Google TV app but not sure why you would be using your phone at all.
1000% this. The app works fine , but gee - it sure could do with a 2020 update.
Drop the touchpad option (just need the keyboard) - add in the missing remote buttons - job done.
Google sells beta products and then abandons them. Big bad rich google can’t make anything well besides Gmail and drive. They have left and joined the tv space leaving users with obsolete crap. They can’t even get live inet tv built in like roku or vizio. Those platforms are leaps and bounds better and more stable as well.
Consumer version of Android TV is a step child for sure. They don't even have chrome for it. Google duo, etc.b
What should they update and why ? Is it broken? No, it's works just fine.
Its Google.
Expecting them to have any consistency in naming, updates or using common services is foolishness.
I full expect the new GoogleTv to be rebranded and relaunched in 2 years.
