Budget: Android TV Box + Steam Link... Questions Before Buying

by avidrunner84

Hi all,

I am looking for an Android TV box that has built in ethernet and can offer SteamLink without any input lag. Is any Android TV box with Android 9 adequate enough or am I looking for something in particular in terms of the hardware?

Here is one that I am looking at, at less than half the price of an Amazon Fire Stick:

I used Steam Link on Shield TV and there's hardly any input lag, however both my desktop and my Shield are connected via ethernet.

Just bare in mind the box you linked is not a proper Android TV OS box, it just runs basic Android so a lot of apps will not be optimised for TV use. A quick search it seems the new Chromecast with Google TV can handle Steam Link fine without too much latency issues, so maybe consider that if you're after a cheap Android TV/Google TV box.

Please keep in mind that this subreddit is for discussing the Android TV Operating System and devices that run it. A full list can be found here .

The device you have linked is not an Android TV device and thus is not suitable to be discussed here.

I have used Steam Link on my Nvidia Shield TV (2017) and it worked perfectly fine. However, the Shield devices tend to be rather high-end and more expensive than anything you seem to be considering.

There have been users that say Steam Link works perfectly fine on the Chromecast with Google TV, and it would be more suiting to (what I presume is) your price-range.
